drilling into pin

pretty simple question i guess...is it okay to do this? any negatives result b/c of doing this. i'm talking about just drilling into part of the pin, not drilling the entire pin out. lmk.

I usualy try and drill the entire area of the pin out, most of the time if you only drill part of the area out you will see stress cracks develope in about 15-20 games. I have found that if i am within a 1/8-1/4 inch of the pin i tend to get stress cracks through the pin to finger holes. although there is nothing wrong with the cracks itself but over time they will migrate and you will see chunks come off the ball from cracks that ajoin to each other from migration. if it were me i would drill it out entirely.

The pin is just a marker.  It only serves a functional purpose while they are making the ball in order to hold the core in place.  I've had quite a few bowling balls where either part or all of the pin was drilled out, never had a problem.  You may end up with the pin cracking, but if that happens you can just drill the rest out and fill it with plugging material.

I have had no problems placing the pin dead center between the finger holes on Columbia and Track balls. While it probably voids the warranty, I have not had any cracking. I tried it with a Lane#1 ball (Brunswick manufacture) and the area around and under the pin cracked because under the pin, just below the level of the coverstock is a void. I will not do that again with a Brunswick ball.

I drilled out a Storm Hot Rod, placing the pin under the ring finger, exactly. No problem so far. I intend to drill the next few balls that way.

I have a gp2 w/pin drilled out that I shot 300 with.....no problems here.

One of my favorite layouts is placing the pin in the ring finger. I have never had cracking in any ball that I have entirely drilled the pin out.

Getting close to the pin can and probably will eventually promote cracking.
