Sanding Back Flare...........
« on: March 07, 2006, 01:09:08 PM »
Looking at past weeks layouts from the Tour and a couple of weeks list the players as scuffing/sanding the back flare's on their equipment.  To me this sounds like they as sanding just one side of the ball track.  Does anyone know what this means or can you describe a good method for doing and what effect it will have on the ball?

I know it will increase traction but what would a player be trying to accomplish by applying this method?

Thanks,

It means that they are sanding the area of the ball where the last several flare rings are and are not sanding the area of the ball with the first several flare rings.  By not sanding the first few rings, the ball will not grab too early and save energy.  When the ball flares to the sanded area, it will grab more and hook harder.  This practice is legal in PBA competition but not USBC competition.  The USBC states that if a ball is sanded, it must be sanded uniformly throughout the entire surface.

While this may be illegal according to usbc let me ask you this question. After many games on a high flaring ball the the track area will be worn to about 600 grit finish while the balance of the ball is highly polished. What is the difference? None.

Moose, you are quite welcome.

tburky, I was just stating the rule.  I didn't make the rule.  I understand your point and I could take the pro or con side on the rule and make a decent argument.  Like many of the current USBC rules, there is much that can be debated.

I thought it was illegal to sand only certain parts of a bowling ball. Doesn't the whole ball have to have the same surface?

Yes in USBC sanctioned competition.  PBA it's OK.
