Sarge Easter Grip....
« on: April 25, 2011, 02:23:33 AM »
For the last few years I have been fighting with limited flexability in my ring finger. Just this past year I have worked to change my grip to try to alleviate the stress on it, starting with forward pitch in the ring, and then a dropped ring finger before this season.

While it has took away most of the pain, the comfort level was pretty close to as perfect as I could expect.

Fast forward to this past weekend, my wife and I bowled a 5 game tournament and even during practice, something didnt feel right. No pain, but definitely just a bit weak in my wrist and forearm. By the 3rd game, something either popped or moved, and from then on it was all I could do to get the ball down the lane. I should have stopped then, but stupid me kept bowling.

So yesterday I could barely touch my ring and middle fingers to my palm, still no pain but they were definitely sore. Today, the flexability is better, and while there is still no pain the strength is better.

So im thinking this may be the time to go back to the Sarge Easter grip, to try to take even more stress off my ring finger. For the shop operators out there, am I on the right track if thinking here, will the Sarge Easter grip help with the stress and stretch on my ring finger??

It will decrease all of the above on your ring finger, but you will gain more stress and stretch on your middle finger. For me, when I went through a injury and used the grip, my ring finger was 1" reverse (away) on the ring finger and 1/2" right (lateral), but I also tweaked my middle finger pitches and span.....basically your ring finger will be come a "rudder".....lol!

Thanks for the reply, as for my middle finger im not too concerned with it at the moment it feels fine. Ive seen this coming with the ring finger though, it has just lost flexability over the years. Add to the fact that I tuck my pinkie(and have for years), and it was just a matter of time.

So all that has led me to this, which is a total grip change plus im going to have to get used to not tucking. Its gonna be a long summer looks like.

I believe you will be comfortable quicker than you think. Be sure to do it on a old ball first, you will probably have to tweak some things a couple times to get a good feel if you have never used the grip before. I did find when I was using the grip that some of my specs. changed...specifically my PAP, and I gained some speed and revs.....just remember to change layouts to react to your new grip and specs.....IMHO

I hope you meant reverse pitch instead of forward, to accommodate limited flexibility you want to use some combination of reverse pitch and reduced span.  I think a trip to the doctor would be in order.  --  JohnP

If it hurts your hand it doesn't fit right. It's not that complicated people...
