how many pro shops still use scribes to lay out their balls? and why? is it more accurate than a grease pencil or

i think a scibe is 1/128 of an inch and a nicely sharpen pencil is around 1/64 . if a bowlers can feel a 64th then they have too much time on there hand.

I have always said a good bowler might be able to feel 1/64th, but they should be able to bowl just the same with that 1/64th!!! I would say even up to 1/32nd should be acceptable, once you get to 1/16th then you can cry

you would also be amazed at how many shop cant measure tilt and rotation

The shops that use scribes feel its more accurate on the drilling. Some people like that and they feel it gives them more of a proffesional feel to the ball. Ive had both done and have not felt any difference. I personally like the wax pencil as it dont leave the permanent marks.
Everyone has their preferances.

Being off 1/16" and up is totally unacceptable. If a ball is measured and marked correctly, what is so hard about getting the hole right? My driller is never off even 1/32".

I agree with Brick. A professional driller should never ever miss drill a hole with pencil/scribe marks. The only error that could come with drilling is mismarking the grip. I personally never drill off of a sheet of paper. I always use another ball as reference before drawing lines on a new ball. I think a scribe is a little more accurate, because you can clearly see where your hole is in relation to the scribe mark when drilling the pilot hole.

Heres a good one - I went to a new proshop to see how they were and I had them match a ball.. The pro (a pba regional guy) asked me numerous questions about the pitches in my ball... Well he decided that they were wrong and changed them all from forward 1/8 to reverse 1/8 (I think I am right - forward away from the center of grip and reverse into the span...well you can figure it out and maybe educate me)... Well needless to say, I can't get out of the ball and now the span feels too long on the middle finger... So much for trying something new...
Oh and I know it is off topic, but I thought it might fit...

no, forward is into the grip and reverse is away.

Forward pitch is towards grip center.
Reverse is away from grip center.

NextLevelPS,
I couldn't agree more on everything you state except the scribe thing. A dull grease pencil is about 1/8" thick. If you cut one side instead of the other you are 1/8th off. A scribe is so much more accurate. The thing is you don't have to carve up the ball with lines to use the scribe for measuring purposes. I always use a scribe for the better players and I use pencils for the rest. I always ask though because some people are not to accepting to "scratching their new ball" LOL!! Beans

Grease pencil for all marks except the actual span lines which are done with a scribe. The span cut lines are the only ones that require the extra accuracy.

Using a scribe is OK if you keep marks to a minimum. A CL running half way around the ball is totally unnecessary. Same with finger and thumb scribes being 3" long in every direction. In actuality, you can use a scribe so lightly as to sand and polish them off if really necessary.
Hint, a lead pencil will work if you take some 2000 or so and dull the area to mark. Shines back up easy.
I've seen a driller make scribe marks almost as deep as the serial numbers on a Brunswick ball.

Nope.
I bought a used ball once whose scribe lines were that deep. The guy who sold it to me siad he wouldn't go to any driller who didn't use scribes. I thought he and his driller were bad juju for different reasons.

You can erase a grease pencil, try doing that with a scribe. They are UGLY...
