Homemade Ball Compass

Hey guys.  I was wondering if anyone had any idea of how to make their own ball layout compass like the one Jayhawk sells?  The only reason I won't buy that is that I heard its somewhere near $100.  Ouch!!  Anyway, I wanted to know because you really need a ball compass to layout newer balls especially like the Paradigm if you've ever read the drilling instructions.  Just wondering what everyone else thinks or has done.  I did read one post on here from someone who explained how they layout a ball and he had pictures and it is showed him drawing arcs on the ball to get the PAP location and then distance above midline, etc.  Just wondering. Thanx guys.

I use exactly what saw the rack describes, with a slight modification.  I bend the pointed end of the compass so when you put it on the pin, cg, or mb it remains more upright and makes it a bit easier to draw the lines.  I also use a quarter scale to set the compass on the distance I want.  I know a guy that bought 10 or so compasses, set them to different lengths, then crimped them all so they don't change.  Save your $100.

A string & thumb tack or push pin will work just as good along with your wax pencile.

The only problem I see with the compass is that measuring with a flat ruler and measuring along the surface of the ball are not quite the same.  6 3/4" across the surface of a ball (the usual pin-MB distance) is only a hair over 6" with a flat ruler.  As long as that's corrected for, a few compasses, say, in 1/4" increments, will serve most needs.  The tack-and-string method would be more accurate, but can be kinda awkward.

I've done this, but it is much harder to set for a specific length than it is with a compass.
