Which do you prefer to use, and why? Is one easier to sand and bevel? Any other differences?

Urethane all the way!!

I personally prefer the feel of a urethane slug. From a pro-shop point of view I don't like working out Vinyl slugs as they are a bit softer and don't sand / carve the same.

Only urethane. I tried a friend's ball with vinyl, and it was horrible for me. Much too slick, espcially when the thumb becomes wet from sweat in summer, and IMHO not easy to manipulate for adjustments.

Having urethane inserts in my balls was a real step forward, and I like to have them rather loose, but with a sanded/matte surface. I also tried a sheen/polished surface, but this caused the ball to fall off of my hand to early and me to grip it too tight.

I recently switched all of my stuff from vinyl to urethane, and I'm loving it. I think that urethane has a smoother feel and allows me to clear my thumb with more ease and consistency of feel. Plus, temperature changes are not nearly as dramatic with the urethane. With vinyl, my thumb would feel clammy in warmer temps. With the urethane, there is less variation.

...Urethane also holds up better in temperature differences. Vi- will tend to warp and go crazy.

I agree that urethane is best, but if you have a ball with a vinyl slug or sleeve and it's too slick, just hit it lightly with 100 grit sandpaper to rough it up a little. Or use a piece of white tape in the front of the hole. -- JohnP
