I keep two layouts and for the last 6/7 years - long and strong/skid snap. Bowled at the same house for 10+ years.... My game has changed over the years and these two layouts has become over under with some patterns outside this house. Or controlling flying backend becomes a struggle.

The house I'll be moving to has screaming backend. My LT-48 which is somewhat smooth at one house I bowl leagues. But it's a hockey stick at this particular house I bowl frequently lately. (4k/Secret sauce) I had to bring it to 1k just to smooth out the backend.

I recently had a talk with one of BR's original legends who no longer post here for some time. He mentioned about having a shorter pin to pap layout, but because were bowling a tourney together, he didn't get into detail. I never owned a ball with less than 4" pin layout and I don't really understand it, only it has lower flare and keeps core stable early??

I'm guessing pin down near center grip can achieve an earlier smoother reaction or blend out over under. help me under stand these low and/or short layouts...

Here are a few explanations of pin to PAP distances as well as some more info on the 'Rico' layout.

The reason why the 'Rico' layout tends to be stronger in the back part of the lane is the placement of the weight hole. By placing the weight hole at 6 3/4" from the pin, creates the strongest amount of asymmetry in the ball. Asymmetry in the ball can help create continuity in the back end.

Pin to PAP placements are as such (devoid of surface prep and a weight hole):

Placing the pin at leverage or 3 3/8" from the PAP allows the highest amount of flare potential in the core. Flare potential is dependant on core strength or RG differential. Leverage or 3 3/8" pin placements generally will create more overall hook, front to back, more so than side to side. A leverage or 3 3/8" pin placement does not tend to create an angular reaction, as most think due to this being considered the strongest layout.
Any deviation from leverage, changes flare potential, as well as reaction shape.
Placing the pin closer to PAP, decreases flare potential and creates an earlier reaction on the lane and a smoother back end reaction.
Placing the pin farther from the PAP and closer to the track, decreases the flare potential and creates a later reaction and a smoother back end reaction.

I have low tilt, and if the pin is closer to my pap, that might not be good right? granted I can increase my tilt, but it's not my a game.

Not necessarily. I have low tilt as well and one of my favorite balls I've ever had was my Storm Ride and I had the pin 2 3/4 or 2 7/8 from my PAP
