There are many elderly bowlers that can not generate ball speed and don't have the strength to get a good and powerful turn on the ball.  I have seen many of these bowlers go to the pro shop and ask for a ball that is going to hook more and they are given the newest strong cover hook monster... What happens is, with their slow ball speed and weak rotation, the ball hits dry and immediately rolls forward and doesn't hook any more (and sometimes less) than their current ball.

What ball would be best for bowlers like this for max hook and board covering potential?  Is there a certain layout that would be best for this?

Might static weights actually have an influence here because of the slow ball speed and minimal rotation.  Perhaps maximize the positive side weight, finger weight,  and top weight?  I know, I know. Those don't do anything...  but with a flaring ball that is rolling slow it will end up putting the maximum amount of imbalance on the left side of the ball as it is rolling down the lane and should help the ball move left.

What do you think?  Anybody specialize in drilling for elderly bowlers?

My dad does good with the polished pearl high end rotos.

When he's got his skid wore out, were moving on to the no rules pearl.  He had the cell pearl prior...All were great..

My dad is 12-13 mph...Known as the slowest roller in the house lol.

Higher differential balls?  How drilled?

  • I have a name, therefore no preferred pronouns.
J, see Larry or Bob at West Lane Bowl Pro shop. Both are 70+ with low ball speed and know all the current balls.

Bill, just curious, but what weight ball does your dad usually throw?

I think it's hard to generalize about this situation. I've seen many older bowlers, male and female, who used to average 190- 220, who now throw the ball between 8 and 10 mph. They have different rev rates, tilt and rotation and they bowl on different amounts of oil.

These factors determine the type of ball and the drilling. Most, however, due to their low speed will use polished balls and will use balls 1 - 2 steps weaker for an amount of oil than normal speed/rev rate bowlers will use. That is, they'll use a Cyclone when a regular bowler will use a Gamebreaker; they'll use a Rhino, where a regular bowler will use an Edge or a Fanatic SS.

The problem with lower ball speed and minimal rotation is it shortens the lane and more importantly the hook phase
Surface is the most important factor plus cover stock strength...as this will always dictate length increasing control...when the ball reaches transition or the hook phase it's not only fighting the slow speed it's also fighting the factor the rotation of the ball is not traveling towards the pocket...a smaller engine or core helps lengthen this as it takes longer thru this phase as it'll take longer to expend its rotational integrity
Unfortunately every situation varies but generally the choices are minimal as ball speed dictates a greater influence of reaction...try a lower weight to increase speed
