Solids and Pearls
« on: February 08, 2008, 01:28:37 PM »

Assume you are drilling up both a solid and pearl version of the same ball.  How would lay them out?  Would you lay them out the same or different?

It depends on what function you need them to fulfill.

If they have the same core, the pearl of an twin pair is rarely the goto ball when the solid stops working. One usually needs two steps down, when the pearl is usually one step down.

If they have different cores, then the situation can be different. Again it depends on what you need them for.

If you need them to complement one another, then if you'd drill the solid with a 4" pin, then you'd probably drill the pearl with a 5.5" pin to weaken it enough to be a goto ball.

I am with CharlesT - assuming that the two balls are identical, even the same coverstock with just a solid and pearl reactive version, both with the same surface prep, they'd IMHO be too close if you drill them the same.

If they should be a complementary couple, I'd drill the solid one stronger, for earlier roll and the pearl for more length and flip, just as CharlesT suggests. I'd also keep the pearl polished, and take the shine off of the solid one. This will be a good, more arcing ball for oilier shots, while the pearl will be a option for late games, light oil and the THS one might encounter.

For reference for such a combo, check out Brunswick's current BVP Rampage and Wizard - basically the same ball, but with differing surfaces and a proper setup, this is a very versatile combo that will cover anything but the most extreme conditions.

I have a LM Sting, Buzz and Hornet all drilled the same they compliment my style and technique very well but I'd think YMMV depending on technique and conditions bowled on.
