« on: January 13, 2009, 08:52:31 AM »
I know ive posted this before but just making sure.  No matter what the span length, if a person goes from 1/4 reverse to 1/8 reverse they should shorting their span by 1/16th?

Yep, 1/16th for every 1/8th.

That's the formula, but in actuality for a small change like that there's little need to change the span.  So if you want to do it by reslugging, I'd just leave the spans the same.  If your driller has a Jayhawk-style fitting bell, try the changes on that before you make them.  --  JohnP

Thanks for the input John.  My driller doesn't have the jayhawk fitting ball.  I have a bowling ball I use for trying different grip changes.  I will first try it without changing my span.

If you have a modern relaxed span, there is no need to adjust the span.  Many people have a stretched span along with too much reverse in the thumb.  If they keep the span stretched and move the thumb pitch forward, they hang in the thumb and blame the pitch move.  I did shorten my span at the time I was trying forward pitch in the thumb, but it was because my span was too long.  I still have a few old balls lying around and wonder how I ever threw them.  I forget how much the span was changed, but I moved from 5/16 reverse to 3/8 forward in one shot.  I'm now at 5/8 forward and haven't changed my span since.

I changed my thumb pitch from 1/4 reverse to 1/4 forward in steps without changing my span at all..

No problems here, it works for me..

Im not looking to make a big grip change or to move my thumb pitch really far forward.  I'm only making a minor grip change to find out how it compares to what im using now.

ok just to throw into this topic because i myself was thinking about changing my thumb pitch
my grip is super sensitive like i feel stupid minute changes in span and what not but i was just wondering would a eighth more forward really feel that different in which it could mess ones release up ..

what does that eighth really do im guessing im assking

right now im at quarter reverse eighth under

considering going to eighth reverse keeping the eighth under

You will definitely feel a difference with 1/8 change, hard to predict if it will cause a problem.  It will make it easier to hang onto the ball, or harder to release - whichever way you want to think of it.  It will also put more pressure on the area at the base of your thumb.  If you have an old ball you don't use ask your driller to drill the grip on an area of the ball that won't interfere with the existing holes and try it.  The ball won't be legal for competition, but it will give you a chance to feel the difference.  --  JohnP

I didn't like the change.  I'm amazed that 1/16" more forward was noticable.  I have more of a stretched span and could feel the difference.  I would of probably liked it more if I would of shortened the span by an 1/8.  I'm happy with my current grip so i'm sticking with the 1/4 reverse.

yhea i just tried it and im not to happy with it so im going to jutst stick with my quarter reverse also

an eighth of an inch is way to much change for me and it was just an ecperiment anyways so im not goingto screw myself up over a stupid pitch
