Drilling experts HELP!!
« on: May 20, 2003, 04:49:10 AM »
I'm rh bowler with 5 1/8 x 5 1/4" span I am currently useing a 1/4"reverse in my thumb with a 1/8" lateral outside the palm on the side of the thumb. I also use a nice rounded bevel on the thumb edge but I still seem to get a little soreness on thefront edge of thumb and it seems I kind of have to squeeze a little.

please give suggestions......thanks

Most likely your span is to long. Put your thumb all the way into the ball and lay your fingers across the finger holes. The front edge of the finger holes should be in the middle of the first and second knuckle. Some people like to use a little bit longer than that, but I wouldn't go no more than a 1/16th or so longer than that.

The soreness comes from having to squeeze the ball.  There could be a number of reasons for this.  Span too short, thumb hole too big, too much reverse pitch, too much bevel, or any combination of these.  It is really hard to tell on the internet.  What part of the country do you live in?  I may be able to help you find a knowledgable pro shop professional in your area.

Let me know.

Just a note.

From Bill Taylor's table the proper reverse for you span is

4 1/4 = 0
Every 1/4 add 1/8 so that =
4 1/4 plus 4 X 1/8 = 1/2 inch reverse!

NOw since you are 1/4 this is a little more foward than many would use.
To use it you will tend to have to have more front bevel than with the proper span.

I would try adding a little more front bevel.  Found with thumb in and ring finger only in ball.  Thumb moved in and out while ring finger stays in search for spot in front which causes drag in back of ball!  Bevel it gently.

IF that doesn't work on relieving pain and hanging, go to 3/8 reverse.
You will not need quite as much bevel there.
