Question about "Girard" reverse flare layout.
« on: June 11, 2006, 03:26:14 AM »
Ok, so the Girard reverse flare layout with the pin on the negative side of the ball in the thumb quadrant 5" from the NAP yeilds (xXx) reation with the flare reversed and the bowtie dropped.  Say I took a med-low RG Pearl and went 4" to the NAP would that just increase the amount of reverse flare?  Or would the overall effect be the same?  Or would it spin up quicker and quit on the backend?  ....Just wondering before I try something crazy.

DP3, I have a ball with the Girard layout. I can't tell you how much the reaction would change, but it may change the space that is required between the pin & the thumbhole. If you do not maintain about 1 1/4" from the line drawn between the pin & PAP to the thumbhole, you may track over the thumb.

It's a 4 1/2" pin.  I have plenty of room

Hmm. Mine has a 5 1/2" pin with the cg only about 1/8" below center. The pin is at 7 o'clock about 2 1/2" below & left of thumb. I still have about 1 1/4 " between the line drawn from pin to pap. Without putting it on the spinner & laying it out to find the nap, I can only guess that the pin is about 4 1/2" from nap. It is a particle ball & with it dull, I get an earlier banana shaped ball roll. The only time I noticed any roll-out was when the lanes were pretty dry. With the same ball polished, I can move deeper with a little swing & get lots of length with a sharp break on the backend. It's almost a hockey stick hook set reaction. Sorry I can't really answer your original question, but I think lane condition & ball surface prep would affect the outcome more than pin to nap.

Obviously its going to flare a bit more than placing the pin 5 inches from the nap, but the question is will it "flare out?" I believe that unless it has a pretty large differential, the ball will pick up just a bit earlier from placing it closer to the nap and continue slighly more on the backend. Overall, they are both going to be uber smooth drillings, but I don't think the ball will necessarily get that dreaded hook-die reaction with your style. The extra length from placing the pin 5 inches from pap is needed on tour conditions: you might not necessarily need it. It will definately give you a different look in your bag, and I think with as much axis rotation as you have, you should get the necessary length to keep the ball from dying out, while still allowing a smooth but continuous backend reaction. It should be a good ball for battling many of the house shots that just send the ball straight left when you get the ball outside of 10.
