Question about Vise-It Inserts?
« on: March 21, 2009, 04:20:15 AM »
I picked up 8 balls yesterday from a friend, 2 have the Vise-It thumbs inserts in them.

If I understand it correctly the outer sleeve is drilled with the bowler's pitches, the inner slug is 0 degrees.

The bowler I received the balls from has 7/16" reverse, and 3/16" away from palm on his drilling.

My thumb is 1/8" reverse, 0 lateral...

Q: Is there any way I can keep his pitches as drilled and re-drill the inner slug closer to my pitches?

I can easily use more reverse in my thumb (i.e., 3/16, 1/4, evenup to a half), have a problem with away on the lateral...Can my driller change the pitches, without going through the slug wall?

The balls are: Brunswick Swarm and Wild Ride.

I'd like to try the Vise-It system.

TIA,

I dont know much abou the ITs but I went from 1/4 reverse to 1/8 reverse in switch grips with no problem and they are the same way with the pitch in the outer and the inner is drilled at zero.

Depends on what size thumb you have and what size slug the balls were drilled for. I THINK for example, if the hole in the ball was for a 1 3/8 slug and you use maybe a 15/16 size thumb the differences in the picthes could be drilled in the new slug to work. I think that the 1 3/8 slug would have enough "wall" to be able to pitch your thumb hole to make up the difference.
Good luck!

My thumb size is 61/64, hole is 1-3/8...Maybe it'll work.

What type of a drill press does your driller have. I have the ovalmatic (used on the PBA TOUR) and it wouldn't be a problem on it. I would think that a good mill/drill would work for you! 5/16 forward and 3/16 palm in the slug would do the trick!!!!!

If he can't I'll be happy to send one to you. If the original was done (installed) correctly all you will have to do is lock it in and cut down to ball surface and bevel to your liking. Let me know!
Thanks

Jst thought of another consideration to this project. Might have to drill the first hole 7/8 at 0/0 pitches to be able to "seat" the locking system on the slug BEFORE drilling the 61/64 at the correct pitches!!!!!!!!

I've only had to go as much as 1/4, but using a 1" bit, and on a 1-3/8 slug, seemed to still have a decent amount of wall left in the slug. Should be able to pull the whole deal off. Worst case scenario, you ruin one slug and drill another.

Offtopic, but does anyone know what the total depth you need to be able to drill to install the Vise IT thumbs? There's an extra inch for the molly on top of the initial hole correct?

Correct. I have the Jayhawk Tri Oval, and I hit the stop before reaching the full depth. I basically just lock the bit in short, at a marking that i added, so the 1/2" bit hole is from the 1" mark to 0. Otherwise, the last 1/4" or so has no depth guide, and like i said, Ill hit the stop anyways. I don't really understand why this one hits the stop, as the Innovative mill I was originally using reached the depth fine, and they both seem to be identical, aside from the jig, and the jigs seem to sit the ball at very similar heights.
