First Time Drillings and Measurings
« on: October 30, 2003, 01:36:07 AM »
Talking to one of the local pro shop operators, we came up with an interesting topic of conversation. When measuring someones hand and drilling a ball for the first time, what pitches do you use?

Not all house balls are drilled with pitches, so do you put a pitch on a first time bowlers conventional ball? Do you pitch their thumb even though they are not used to having a pitch on it?

What about first time fingertips? Do you put a pitch on there?

I am thinking of starting to work in the pro shop business, so I am very interested to know how people set up for first time customers.

We use adjustable measuring balls. Jayhawk makes a model of them (ours are older AMF models). You can adjust the span and the pitches on the ball.

The customer is asked a series of questions to determine what their tendencies are. Do they have a ball currently? If so we check the span and pitches in that ball. Do they drop or stick in the thumb? Do they like to throw the ball out on the lane or set it shorter? Do they bowl better when they get the ball out on the lane further or not?

We then have the customer throw the measuring ball to us in the air so that they can feel the pitches and we can see the release. The pitches are then adjusted based on what we see.  We explain what pitches are being adjusted and show them how a different pitch can make you stick or drop the ball,  even with the same thumbhole size. Adjustments are made until we are happy with the release and they are happy.

We then  take the measurements off the ball and put into the computer system and then drill a ball if they are purchasing one then.

This is the only way I know of to accurately determine pitches for new customers. The balls are expensive but well worth the money.

It really doesn’t take that long. For most customers no more than 10 to 15 minutes. It’s time well spent to get it right the first time.

If we can get them to let us measure them 99 times out a 100 they will come back because they see the care we put into the fitting and nobody else does.
