Title: Static Weight Idea
Post by: Locke on November 17, 2010, 02:06:00 AM
So I have found that I get a more accurate and consistent release with finger weight. I found this out on accident with a Cell with .9 finger weight. I have now changed all my balls to it and find a much cleaner release. Has anyone else run into this? My ball driller looked at my like I was nuts when I asked him to bring every ball to .9 until he saw the difference in action.

I don't see how it would affect your release, it may make a MARGINAL difference in ball reaction, if that's what you're talking about.

that 9/10ths of a whole ounce must make a huge difference in your release, must be all that extra weight on your fingers or something.

Locke,

Any explanation on why this is happening? You must admit that it is a difficult concept for the rest of us to wrap our heads around, considering the small marginal weight you are dealing with.

If you have convinced yourself it matters, then it matters to you. Just a placebo effect maybe?

not to stir up any arguements but sometimes the smallest thing cant affect everything...maybe not for the greater whole but sometimes the littest change can affect the ball motion immensely for one person.

bowling is like a signature, everyones style will be different and in my eyes thats one of the coolest things about this sport

So what happens when the ball has a full ounce of finger weight, do you all of a sudden become a garbage can bowler, how about 8/10ths of an ounce...do you fire you ball driller?

I am not talking about static weights effecting the reaction of the ball. What I have found is that the added weight on the fingers for some reason gets my thumb out cleaner. It was the only thing I changed. The way I found it was by noticing that I only had one ball that I was feeling good about the way it came off my hand. It was one of my Cells. It had a really abnormal drilling on it so I looked at what it could possibly be and realized the only difference was that static weight. So, out of curiousity I changed them all and it worked for all of them. Maybe it is just placebo, but I find it interesting. The way I figure it is that the added weight out on the fingers helps take pressure off my thumb somehow.

I agree, when I have .876302198oz of thumb weight, I get 2 more revs.  Dialing in that thumb weight is the problem.

The offset of the static weight is not anywhere near the surface of the ball. In fact, they are closer to the center of the ball than you may think. However, if it works for ya, knock yourself out.

I heard somewhere that Norm Duke has all his balls drilled with 3/8 side weight, and will not bowl with anything else.

Pretty sure it was said during commentary on the WSOB on Xtra Frame. Unsure of which round/tournament etc.

The more likely reason that you are coming out cleaner is your grip was changed a little bit when the balls were redrilled, not a minor change in finger weight.

The span, pitch, thumbhole size something was changed.

They weren''t redrilled they either had a weight hole added, changed or the thumb was deepened. My only thought maybe is if the thumb hole is deepened the vacuum in the hole would be less and my thumb would come out cleaner. But the ball that I found this on does not have a deep thumb.
