Switch Grip for fingers?
« on: June 29, 2010, 11:40:04 PM »
Hi everyone...I just saw on the Turbo Site that they are now making Switch Grip for fingers.  Same concept as the thumb inserts, but now for fingers as well.  I was wondering if anyone has tried these yet and how they are to install in the shop?  Do you still use a 1/4" bridge with these or do you drill them so the outer sleeves touch?  Just wondering.

Thanx.

Has anybody on here ever heard of exPBA pro Arnie Goldman? He actually came up with the idea of interchangable grips and thumb slugs back in like 1990 or something and patented it and everything. Word has it he tried to sell his invention to Turbo, who's headquarters by the way was like within a 5mile radius from his house, and Vise and was turned away by both of them. Then not too long after that they both came out with their own switch grips. He's been tied up in court with them for years over them stealing his idea. Come on Turbo and Vise, give the man his due, do you need ALL the money? Yo u can see Arnie's device at Perfectagrip.com. There's some links on there that explain the whole deal

I dont think you could use a standard 1/4" bridge for these.  The inner and outer sleeve material is 1/16" thick so when you look the inner into the outer you end up with 1/8", times 2 that makes 1/4".  so now you have a 1/2" bridge between the grips...ouch!  I hope Turbo takes that into account.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes, I have heard of Arnie Goldmans product..but never seen it in person.

Speaking of Arnie, he's been selling all of his bowling balls on Craigslist.  Mostly older stuff, but he has over 400 balls I think.

He might have invented and patented the switch grip idea, but that is about the worst website I have seen. Talk about hideous. And whats with all the pink? The pink and light blue with a black back ground looks like a Myspace page of a preteen girl.

Storm had these in their demo balls at the summer roadtrip seminars. Although some guys who are picky about finger snugness may want these, They will be best used for try before you buy balls and demo situations. They had the balls drilled with a narrow bridge, maybe strong 1/8th, with the fingers pitched 1/2 left and 1/2 right. Claimed they weren't seeing any cracking issues. Seemed like a good product. Sure made it easy to test balls, grab two finger inserts and a thumb and start chucking balls.

A little off of the subject, but at these demo days to they have balls with different spans?  Or are they all drilled around 4-1/2 (which seems most common)?  My span is a shade over 5" so if I ever do go to a demo day, hopefully they have one close to that.

Ebonite demo days usually have balls from 4 1/8 up to 5 in 1/8 incriments.

There were some finger grips and thumb grips, back around early '80's, that you used a screw driver to turn a screw in the bottom of the grip to make the hole smaller or larger. The thumb grips were green and the finger grips were orange and white if I remember correctly.

strykalot,

Those things were so nasty! I know a couple guys that liked those things though. The finger grips were box oval shaped and hard and slippery. Don't know how guys used them or how anyone thought they were a good idea to start with!

Hey strykalot and iced earth, those were Arnie Goldman's I'm pretty sure. I see him at a sweeper from time to time and every ball he has has what you just described. And after every shot he's over there fiddling with the screwdriver and ball trying to get the perfect grip. The man might be a lil off kilter, but I tel you what, the man can flat out bowl!!! Period!!! And I don't think he has a ball that is newer than 15 years old that I've seen

I remember a thumb grip from the early to mid sixties that had an adjustment screw in the bottom to change the diameter.  I never used one myself but remember a bowler that had one.  --  JohnP

I tried them back in the day. The finger grips were nasty. When you "tightened" them, all it did was make the grip smaller at the top. The thumb grip had a groove in it that allowed the thumb to expand or shrink. They were a great idea back then.
