Stupid Question
« on: March 31, 2006, 06:14:09 AM »
What will happen if you use a ball that's drilled for a left hander, and bowl right handed with it? What will the reaction be,(or lack of)? Will this be the same as bowling backup with a right hand drilled ball?

Most likely the spans/pitches are all wrong unless they had equal span on both fingers.

But in general the pin will be on the track side so any flare would be minimal if at all.

Any side weight would be probably be negative.

So I would expect a non-flaring ball that would not react strongly as the negative side weight would try to hold it back.

The ball would hook in the normal direction for that bowler. If they threw a backup shot then the pin and weights would be in the positve quadrant.

It may not be quite the same.  I would expect PAP, tilt, and rotation to be different for a lefty than a backup righty.  But, assuming a righty can create a fairly normal lefty-looking release throwing backup, then you're probably going to see a very muted reaction.

Think about it for a second.  A lefty's track is going to be on the other side of the finger holes, and for many normal drillings, that's going to result in the pin being in or near the track.  Equivalent to a very long pin-PAP distance.  I'd expect negative side weight and the reaction characteristics that would have.  If, for some reason, a righty's grip fit a lefty's hand perfectly (which it probably won't), the lefty probably would get a much tamer reaction out of it.

I'd expect a backup bowler to be a little different, since there's no telling what happens to the PAP when you rotate your hand the other way around the ball.

Actually it will depend on the ball and the drilling layout.  This type of layout can become benificiall on shorter drier oil patterns as it takes away a bit of the back end snap off the dry.  I have seen a pro shop owner use a lefty drilling (he's a righty). Working on a 34' oil pattern. ball was smooth through the heads and at the turn made more of a arc then the hard snap.
As a Lefty I can actually pick up my drillers bowling balls and throw his as he can throw mine.
