drill bit sharpening
« on: August 13, 2007, 03:16:19 PM »
I'm kinda new to the pro shop lingo, but it appears as if I will need to sharpen some drill bits. Any suggestions on how to do it or where I should go to get them done?

Thanks.

Check your local yellow pages, there should be a sharpening service of some sort in the area.  I also believe Jayhawk also offers a drill bit sharpening service.

Jayhawk, Innovative, and Turbo Grip all offer the services. I would also contact your local distributor they might have an instate company to do it for faster service.

I personally have a friend that works in a tool shop and is great. trade him a ball at cost and get my entire 41 pc set done plus 3 insert bits.

Occasionally you will need to have a drill bit re-tipped if it's blade is worn to the point it can't be sharpened. This is best done professionally.

Never take a file, rasp or grinder to a drill bit. your going to change the angle of the edge of the blade and reduce it's ability to differ heat.

If you have ever handled a hot drill bit you know it can get to a couple hundred degrees, and can leave a nasty burn if not careful.

I have 4 insert bits i rotate on a monthly basis.
