...what are the effects of drilling a weight hole directly into the MB marker?

I have a ball I'd like to drill out the MB on as kind of an experiment, but what typically would that do? Pin is over the bridge, MB is 4:30 to the thumb about 2 inches away. How would drilling a large weight hole directly into the MB marker change the ball's performance?

I've been told that it INCREASES the strength of the Mass Bias.

OK, so with a ball drilled in this way, for a bowler like me (tweener revs, PAP 4 over 3/8 up, average tilt and high rotation), with the drill pattern on the ball equating to roughly 4.5 x 4, is this going to make the ball smoother, more angular, more responsive to friction, less responsive to friction, hook earlier, hook later, what?

The ball should exhibit more response to friction, and therefore be more angular at breakpoint.

Thanks Gary! That's what I thought but I was waiting for someone more knowledgeable than me to confirm it before I did something dumb.

You are not dumb. Dumb people think that they always know the correct answer.

Intelligent people realize they could be wrong and seek another viewpoint.

How far away should I pitch it to make sure I don't hit the thumb hole?

Aha! Intelligent question!

That depends on how the thumbhole is pitched, and how close to the thumbhole you actually are. Remember that you need to pitch away from the thumbhole, not towards it. Start with 1 inch pitch AWAY from whatever lateral pitch is in the already drilled thumbhole.

P.S. Drill on a junk ball first, and confirm that the holes don't intersect at the bottom !

My thumbhole is pitched 1/8 away (left) for a righthander. The MB mark is 1.5-2 inches right of the thumbhole. I also have to worry about a vent hole for the thumb drilled at 5 o'clock, one inch back. So I may have to go right and a little forward. So we're talking about, say, 3/4 to 1 inch right and about 1/2 forward to be safe?

3/4 to 1 inch pitch ADDED to your thumb pitch should work great. I don't know the angle of the vent hole, but add 1/2 to 3/4 AWAY to the hole. With the small size of the vent hole, 1/2 should be OK. Again, take a junk ball and try these out, but my guess is that you're going to be OK.

I personally would not be concerned with hitting the thumb hole. I would suggest doing what was already suggested, try it on a test ball. You have left lateral in the thumb hole, so I do not think you will hit it, as you will only be going 2-2 1/2" deep with the weight hole.

As far as drilling into the marked mass bias, it depends on the manufacturer and how they create the mass bias. If it a mass bias that is created with a puck or knob, you could more than likely lower the dynamics of the core by drilling into it, thus eliminating it and smoothing out the overall reaction.

If it is in an offset core, creating mass bias, then you will increase the overall dynamics.
