Suggestions for Men´s World Championship in bangkok
« on: June 15, 2008, 09:23:29 AM »
Hi every body

I am going to Bangkok in August to represent my country at wmc.  There will be two different patterns to play, a rather short pattern (34 ft) and a rather long pattern (43 ft).  The patterns can be found here http://www.netmedia-services.com/2008wmc/about/bulletins.htm

I wanted to ask you guys here at BR for some suggestions on 2 new balls for me for each pattern and what sort of layouts would be good according to your suggestions.  (My stats are in my profile).

P.s. I have some of my own ideas but it is always fun to get other peoples opinions.

Well that's so cool!  First off I'd like to wish you good luck!

Initial thoughts on patterns:  This shorter one reminds me of the Cheetah: lots of volume, short in length.  I can see you playing or swinging out towards the ditch, but as the oil moves down you'll probably move right before you move left.  The longer pattern has the same volume as the shorter, so that one will probably break down faster than the shorter one.  I see that playing sort of like the Shark, more towards the center of the lane until it opens up.

As for layouts, 2 balls per pattern, eh?
Shorter pattern:
Ball 1:  I'd do this one pin up, 5 inches pin to PAP.  Get you the length you need with a bite in the back.  I'd actually put the pin close to your VAL.
Ball 2:  I'd actually do a weaker ball with a pin on axis drill.  If the lanes are flying way too much, this will smooth out anything wrong.  Maybe a Pluto, Blue Vibe or Emerald Vibe, or even that new Hammer Rayzr.

Longer pattern:
Ball 1:  Solid, pin down, 4.5 pin to PAP.  Help get into an earlier roll, and this ball will help combat carry down when that happens.
Ball 2:  Same ball, polished, or a pearly/shiny ball, pin up with a 4.5 inch pin to PAP.  Help you get some length when the lanes break down, or if you need more movement in the back part of the lane.

I hope this helps slightly!  And good luck in the tournament!

I would go to Thailand and have a good time.  Things a inexpensive.  The bowling center is in a big mall.  It is going to be hot.  The hotel is nothing to get excited about.  Go to MBK or Pantip Plaza for shopping.

However, if you need to bowl get a weaker ball for the short oil.  Most of your stuff is for medium/medium heavy.  Bring your plastic.  You may be able to use it on the short.  Don't be afraid to use plastic for strikes.  Sand one of your medium heavy balls to 220 or 320 grit and use it for the long pattern.  Bring a medium/medium heavy oil ball.  Also, bring sandpaper/polish so you can change the surface.  The proshop at the center would be of limited help.

Did I say it was going to hot and humid.

I'll be there as well, and one thing to keep in mind....

The bowl was installed in 97 and it's AMF HPL. They get about 10 times as much open play as we do, so the lanes are beat to hell!!!

The short pattern is short with heavy volume but the surface is bad, and the long is not a heavy volume so it'll burn up quick. I'm only bringing one aggressive ball with me. Everyhting else for medium to dry.

thanx for your reply´s

here is what i am thinking of bringing there

Roto Cell
Storm Dimension or Track Up Rising.
Track Tantrum
Roto Pluto
Brunswick Power groove dry ( spares and toasted )

My experience from EMC ´07 was that long was more playable then the short.  It was the same in wienna, as it lookes in bangkok the topography was toasted but playable for short and I saw some strange looking balls for that pattern, for example Robert Anderson of sweden played the first 2 games of short with a schorching Inferno drilled pin axis.

Corey C, how many balls will you be able to bring with you?

It will be fun to go there but I am expecting it to be hot and humid

I will be going with Team Canada as well....I think that one would be just plain silly to not have a urethane ball on the short.....This will be my third Worlds all having taken place in Asia.....The volumes of oil and the surfaces over there hook way more than anything we ever see over here.....I remember in Korea, Remy Ong won the singles playing up the rail with a urethane Tank..  Ive never even heard of that ball but it looked like the old blue Nitro...lol...
Like Corey said, I have never needed an "aggressive early rolling" ball over there.  The key is to get the ball down the lane..  Dont be fooled by the patterns, the scores will be high as these will be the best players in the World....Bring balls that you have confidence in.  On the short like I said, you need a urethane and a reactive ball drilled pin close to axis for when the lanes carry down....On the long, its up to you on that...Its all preference...One ball should be an aggressive ball, then one transition ball, then one to get deep that will get down the lane and around the corner.....good luck and see you in Thailand......

The long pattern reminds me much of the oil I currently have in my club house, just not the forward and backwards oil in the head area. Your PAP is close to mine, as well as revs, I just play a bit slower.
I have huge success on this condition with my old Fuze Eliminator at 1500 grit and with a 4x3 drilling. This ball eats this condition when fresh, but when a track opens or the buffed area dries up, it easily too much ball because it reacts too early and too much. IMHO, a low RG ball with some surface (e. g. a solid reactive at 1.000 grit) and a rather rolly setup (e.g. pin at 4.5 from PAP, pin under the fingers) should work well - say a kind of Special or Secret Agent, a Copperhead or Ultimate Inferno. A Sidewinder with some surface could also come in very handy.

On the short pattern (wow, this is soup in the head area when they apply almost 25ml on 34'), I think that less is more. A mid-range polished pearl ball like a Thunderstruck Pearl or Swarm should IMHO be enough - not drilled overly strong, rather with good length and not for a too sharp breakpoint. An idea could be pin at 5" from PAP above the fingers, and the CG at 75° from the PAP (kind of 5x4 setup).

On both lanes I suppose the pattern to remain pretty stable, because of the lots of oil in the head area. If there is change to be expected and therefore adjustments, I'd rather see it on the longer pattern where the short pattern ball could also be used on a direct line close to the gutter once the lane opens or the "oil ball" is not effective anymore, as a kind of fall-back plan.

Good luck to all - wonder who is going to participate from Germany?

Tim - Don't worry we'll keep an eye on him. -)

sTaurinn - You're allowed to check in 6 balls but you can take as many as you can. I'll only be taking six. It gets expensive for extra bags and extra weight and we have to pay our own expenses.
