suggestions on drilling layouts
« on: December 08, 2006, 07:06:14 AM »
ok, well i finally recieved all of my new equipment, so im sitting here going over  drilling options. I have kept two bowling balls from my past arsenal, and they are:

Scorchin' Inferno (4x3) x-hole in finger quadrant
Vapor Zone (4x3) MB located 1'' right of thumb

The new equipment I am drilling up is:
Thunderstruck Solid
Spitfire
Fired Up
Jolt Solid

I am looking for four different reactions, especially good ones for tougher oil patterns, which is what I usually bowl on. My ball speed tends to be on the slower side, and I have an average rev rate. In addition, my axis tilt is about 45 degrees.

Here is what I was thinking of maybe doing
1. a rico layout on the thunderstruck solid
2. 5.5x4 on the Fired Up (pin up)
3. 5x4 on the Spitfire (pin up)
4. 6x4 on the Jolt Solid (pin up)

Can anyone comment on this? I am just looking for 4 different ball reactions to cover a wide range of light-medium oil conditions. Thanks.

spartanplayaAA, you need to provide your specifics (PAP coordinates, rev rate, axis rotation, ball speed, etc.) for a good recommendation. One tip that I can provide is: When you buy a ball, drill it to enhance it's built in characteristics. In other words, don't buy a ball that is designed to flip (like a Storm Fired Up) and drill it to roll early. Drill it to flip (and as my guess that is what it looks like you've chosen on this layout). Always look to maximize the characteristics of the ball that you choose. There's plenty of smooth arcing balls, and plenty of flip style balls. Obviously, you like Storm. Don't be afraid to contact their tech support with questions. They were always great to me.

I hope that this helps!

I have my Thunderstruck 5" x 2" with a 1" x 2 1/2" hole on my midline and it rolls awesome.  Early revving with great downlane continuation.  Awesome for me on the Shark pattern.  I like your idea on the Fired Up, but would go pin down on the Spitfire.  Spitfire is an early, more rolly fired up, and going pin down would give you a great compliment in those 2 balls.  With that being said, I would drill the Thunderstruck pin down with like a 4 1/2" to 5" pin, and drill the Jolt pin up with the same pin to PAP distance.  This will make those 2 compliment each other nicely.

thanks traumatize, i am going to go with pin down on the spitfire and probably go 5x3 on the thunderstruck (maybe rico layout or some other pin down layout). The Jolt ill be going about 5-6x3 or so. One more question, how strong is the Jolt? I've been getting a lot of mixed responses, some saying it really is weaker as advertised, others have said it looks as strong as the thunderstruck solid. I was hoping for a long, controled breakpoint kind of reaction with this one, anyone with any experience with this ball compared to others? Thanks.
