Switch Grip and Vise IT Question (a bit long)
« on: March 26, 2009, 05:55:07 PM »
Anyone know if you can get he preo ovaled non tapered thumb inserts as the inner sleeve for the turbo switch grips or the vise it system.  These are the vinyl thumbs.  I've tried everything possible and because of my really flat fat thumb I have found a perfect fit with non tapered pre ovaled thumb size 1 and using 3 pieces of white tape on the back of the thumb after the pre ovaled vinyl insert has been hand drilled and sanded just a bit more off the side of the insert.  I used to have this same great fit with drilling vinyl slugs but my old ball driller is not in the strictly proshop business anymore, but has a drill press at his bowling center but is honest enough to tell me he won't be able to do a good job replicating ovals anymore since he doesn't have a good drill press like he used to in the old proshop he worked at.  As you can tell my problem is that I would like to get one insert that I have tooled out and beveled perfectly and be able to interchange it in and out of multiple balls.  I don't much problem of thumb changing sizes.  My current driller is a friend, he is great at getting exact matches of pitches and spans, but he is not well versed in oval drillings on slugs, and doesn't drill as a job, he's a manager of a bowling alley. He figured maybe the vinyl inserts could be used as the inner sleeve for the interchangable systems, because if I wanted to have an drilled oval milled on a vinyl slug like the typical interchangable thumb installation I would have to use a proshop over 1 hour 20 minutes away.  If anyone can answer my question that would be great.

Matt,

Switch Grip has two inner sleeves: One with the slug already installed (in your color choice) and one that is empty. You can take the empty and install your pre-ovaled insert into it. I do this with thumb molds all of the time.

When Turbo initially started the Switch-Grip system, they all came with "empty" inner sleeves. This way you chose which color slug or could use a non Turbo slug if desired. A friend of mine showed me how to install the molded insert and that is all I use now.

PM me if you need any help.

Bigmike, what size thumb mold can fit into the empty sleeve of the turbo switch grip?  I make 1 1/4" thumb molds but this sounds very interesting, having a thumb mold but still have to interchangeable part too?  Nice.

The empty inner only works with 1 1/4 sleeves/pre made molds.

Also if you were on the fence before, Turbo just made a revision that makes the locking tab even larger and can withstand double the pressure. These are the new C3 tabs.

You should be in the house!

I think that you could glue the pre cut insert (1 1/8") into a 1 1/4 solid "IT" that was drilled out 1 1/8'

Mike, do you use any special glue or epoxy to glue your thumb mold into the switch grip insert?  I'm a little worried it would pull out if you didn't glue it enough.  This intriques me.

Thanx.

I have been doing this for over 5 years now with Switch Grip's blank inners.  I use a vinyl 1 1/6 oval insert and put it directly into the 1 1/4 blank inner sleeve.  You can get a 1 inch oval with a 1 1/4 outer diameter to fit directly into the sleve and you should be set.  I install them with Turbo's Slo Zip, a slower curing epoxy so you can everything lined up 100% perfect. No problems at all and the new G3 inners are fantastic.

I use either Turbo Slo Zip or the Loctite Epoxy. The Epoxy is really nice because it sets and stays set even threw the high heat of summer. I had two different molds come loose during summer time that were Turbo Slo-zipped in place.
