Switching from inserts to no inserts
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:34:15 AM »
If I switch to no inserts, do I keep the same size measurements for the holes or do I measure a half size smaller?  Also, since I'm not using inserts, can I make the bridge smaller than 1/4?

Thanks.

i myself tried no finger grips and didnt like it.  the size of your singer(insert - inside) will be the new hole size and as far as the bridge (i'm not a driller just going off what i remember from my driller) any smaller and you tend to have a breakout or a higher chance of it.

I thought with droping the grips that would stop some of the maint cost of bowling --- replacing grips 1,2, 3 times a yr. but it didn't pan out for me no big loss but if ya do it good luck with it.

you keep the bridge the same size as far as I can tell but since the edge of the grip was there before... well your fingers are there instead making the bridge on the ball physically the same but you fingers end up closer.

BTW the bridge in the picture is 1/4"

ill try to post a picture of what was done to my balls.......

here you go. you can see where the ball used to have grips. I think this is as small as you can make the bridge... not sure why you would want it smaller.

what I like to do with my (no fingers) is make it a 1/2 size to 1 size too big and add white tape to the nail side... that way the holes are exactly how I like them.

Ask your driller to measure your fingers for the correct fit without grips.  As the others have said, making the bridge narrower increases the chance for cracking.  --  JohnP

your ball driller should be able to fit your fingers and mill the hole which i highly recommend you do as a ball driller myself it is simple to do and as far as a bridge goes you do not want to go less then 1/4" bridge due to warranty.  now sense you don't have inserts the ball manufacture will be able to replace the ball if it does crack since inserts do VOID the warranty along with thumb slug so does less than 1/4" bridge. if your not worried about a warranty i have tried it myself and used the ball for 2 years it had a 1/8" bridge and it didn't make a difference the ball never cracked but i did notice to me it was uncomfortable and i felt the loss of control, some say the wider the bridge the more control not sure if its true everyone is different you just have to experiment

I'm in the process of going back to no grips as well.. (about 15 balls to plug and redrill).  Main reason for me was physical the grips were just destroying my fingers as I tended to force my fingers in a little and then reset them so the sides of my fingers below the 1st knuckle would blister and tear open over time. It wouldn't matter much if I just bowled league casually but when your bowling 50 to 100 games a week, it's a lot of wear and tear for me.  Another benefit for me is that the feel is more consistent ball to ball without grips and it seems I have more 'feel' during the release itself.  My release feels a touch 'cleaner' without grips... almost like the difference between graphite shafts and steel shafts in golf irons.  Norm Duke has mentioned some of the same reasons why he chooses not to use inserts in his equipment as well.  I also thought my rev rate would drop a little but so far I haven't noticed any significant difference.

i have tried both many times as well....i feel like im losing the ball most of the time without inserts...it doesnt matter how small or well the holes fit my fingers...i do notice a difference in rev rate and feel like i have to squeeze the ball more...anyway good luck
