Finger inserts or not?
« on: April 08, 2007, 09:28:07 AM »
I am interested is some opinions of balls with and without finger inserts.  Pros and cons.  I have all of my equipment with inserts now and am thinking about drilling one without.  Is it tough finding the right finger pitch and amount of bevel and distance between?

I just tried it one day, and i'm glad I went to no grips.

Its not hard to figure out pitch, your driller should have it down and also the amount of bevel depends on feel. I started with extremely little bevel but went to more due to liking the feel of it better.

Its also given me a much more consistent feel ball to ball, and also a cleaner release when bowling. Another pro is cheaper in the long run too!

No grips here.  I use to have them last season but switched this year and I get a much cleaner release without them.

no grips here. last few years i've gone back and forth. beginning of this season, i used grips and i was struggling with my consistency. seemed like my mistakes were amplified by the inserts. anyway, switched a little after the season started to non grips, and finished the year with my highest average ever (231). so, for me personally, no grips is the way to go, but it's really all about feel and what you're looking for when it comes to your release.

i do notice that my equipment hooks a touch less with no grips, so if you're simply looking for revs, go with grips. if you'd like a little harder, more consistent feel (for me anyway) you might like no grips a little better.

personal preference though.

well. i shouldn't be so cut n dry about it i guess. when i used grips with a lip-more revs. without a lip- about the same as no inserts. but when i went to no inserts my driller and i also changed the pitches in my fingers so that i was zero front and back instead of like 1/4 under. that might have something to do with it too.

Grips are great in a ball, they can give you comfort if used properly. If you try to used the grips with lift built in, you will be changing your span and may hang up coming out of the ball. If you use the ovals or rounds all you are doing is giving some comfort to your hand.
Talk to your driller about this, since you can change your span by a 1/4 of an inch using some of these grips.

I'll try it on an old ball.  Hopefully I don't like it and I dont have to chance over all of my equipment.  But if I do it'll be a reason to get rid of some old and get some new.  I just experimented with a thumb pitch and luckily I didn't like so I didn't have to re-slug all of them.  Thanks a ton for all of the informative replys.

I have been using grips for about 10 years now.  Last week, I decided to drill a ball without them.  I felt like I was grabbing everything at the bottom of the swing.  Man, what a difference!  No grips and 3/8 away in each finger and the ball roll is so much better.  I can't grab it even if I try!  I am drilling all new equipment for this regional season (better hurry, we start Saturday...LOL).
