Tapered thumb hole
« on: October 09, 2004, 03:32:45 PM »
I have had a friend show me a new technique to create a tapered thumb hole that allows me to place my thumb deeper into the thumb hole.

But i have noticed after the first 3 days this is placing more pressure on my palm. My hand is now swelling and is becoming sore. i spoke to him and he said this is normal the first few days. but i'm not sure to have faith in him or drop this idea entirely. I didn't think something that was supposed to be better for you be this painful.

I wonder how using the same span and pitches how by using a tapered thumbhole could cause pressure on your palm???

In all reality there are a lot of ways to taper a thumbhole.

Just at the top via bevel and you left all the pitches the same could in effect add reverse and add strain to the equation as ball will act like there is more reverse and one must squeeze.

Or one can taper a hole from both front to back, side to side, both or just one.

I for example have a thumb that has no taper from side to side has a lot of taper from front to back and is oval.  Suppossedly tapered grips cause squeezing.  I don't know why unless someone means they add reverse to front of grip.

Otherwise yesterday I used an old tapered oval thumbhole taper from front to back, side to side taper taken out and tore em up with that ball.  Was it the ball?  The taper grip?  Or the bowler?  Or the lanes!

REgards,

PS look at your thumb.  Do you require taper?  Where?  Front to back?  Side to side?  Did your taper add a bunch of reverse in effect to the thumbhole and also maybe thru beveling both add reverse and shorten span?  Double impact?

Well yes i understand what you getting at Lefty, but i have always been the first person to start beveling a person's thumb hole to make it more comfortable for them.

I did add more forward pitch to my thumb when drilling this ball. but i was using the ball today for league and had minor discomfort occasionally.

i changed my pitching and spans on this ball.

I am going to grab my drill sheet tomorrow and give a detailed message about this.

If you didn't change anything else, placing the thumb deeper in the hole means you have to stretch your span.  Possible that's where the pain is coming from.

Today I placed my tapered oval (from front to back back in the ball at a stronger pitch, (More forward and more lateral under palm,(left for me).

Threw the ball great but had to bevel the front a little to get out cleanly due to stronger pitch.
