Title: The cg is way out....Now what do I do?
Post by: tempo on June 09, 2007, 08:55:18 AM
I've just drilled myself up a Red Zone with the pin above bridge and the mb on my VAL. I knew I would need a weight hole but I thought I'd test the ball first then decide where to put it etc... Tested it and loved the reaction, went back on the scale and OMG! I've got 1 3/4oz side and 2oz fingers. I know I should have checked the cg before I drilled(obviously I didn't on this occasion) but what do I do now? Do I have to use a flare reducing hole(that's what I associate a balance hole in the positive finger quadrant would be)?

Is there somewhere I could put the balance hole without changing the current ball reaction? Otherwise I suppose a slight more flare/flare separation won't hurt.

Or is it best to plug, re cg and redrill the ball?

I've always thought the cg on Big B balls were pretty accurate...now I'm stuck. Please help.

Just put a hole on your axis and drill the fingers a little deeper.

drill the fingers deeper to remove finger weight (and probably will add a bit of side weight) then place the weight hole on/above axis point to remove the side and any potential leftover finger weight. Reaction should not change too drastically.

Would drilling the finger holes deep have any adverse effect as they are where the weight block is? Is there a limit as to how deep at max they could go?

What about adding forward pitch on the balance hole?

Btw, BrunsNick, with the same layout out and surface prep, how would the Red Zone and Vapour Zone compare? Is it significant? (I'm thinking about getting a 2nd hand VP from my friend)

Thank you.

Honestly, you're overthinking it.

After the hole on the axis (assuming you are not inverted), you should have taken down the finger enough to get under an ounce. For your situation, use a 7/8-1" bit and go about 2 1/2" deep. Pitch the hole 1/4 right to keep the bit on the finger side as you drill.

Re-check the weights after the hole on the axis.

If you need to remove some excess finger weight, use a smaller bit (I usually use 13/16" if I drilled for grips), and drill the ring finger deeper.

Make sense?

As for the Vapor vs Red Zone, Vapor should be more angular with similar overall hook. Red Zone will be a touch stronger, especially in the midlane.

Makes perfect sense to me, I'll do exactly that... Thank you very much, BrunsNick!

Btw, I love your website as well!
