Diandra Astaby grip in USA today...today
« on: November 15, 2005, 07:12:24 AM »
For those who question...What should my grip look like in a bowling ball in a modern relaxed fit....

Here is your answer.

Page 3C(sports) a feature article on Diandra(she doesn't cook) Astaby.

Shows the beautiful relaxed fit her hand has in a bowling ball!

Having grip problems compare your finger fit to her look!

Though you can't see the grip too well.  But whose looking at her grip anyway?

Those two little tiny pictures need to be much larger.  Say, around 1024x768.

She is not big...in her hand anyway.

But whether you have a 4 inch span(about hers) or a 6 inch span your grip should look this balanced relaxed and perfect.

I actually have the paper. Picture is fine!

The relaxed grip.  I started using a very relaxed grip about four years ago, before it started to become the rage.  The concept is as follows: instead of stretching the hand over the ball, the fingertips should go completely into the ball with the fingers curled in a relaxed position. The fingerholes should be for the tips, up to the first joint, but the length should be such that WITHOUT stretching, the first knuckle (top knuckle) should be directly over the center of the finger hole.  This grip puts less stress on the forearms and wrists and gives greater control.

yes, that is kind of what my friend was explaining.  with your fingers in the ball, your thumb should just ease into the thumb hole without having to stretch your hand or pulling your fingers out slightly.  he then demonstrated on one of my balls how my span was a little too long.  he also said that when he shortened his span, he was able to hold the ball through the release a lot easier and he did not have to have a real tight thumb hole that a lot of pro shop drillers advocate.  i was just wondering how it felt at the bottom of the swing.  does the thumb clear easily?

Actually, the thumb clears more easily than it did when my span was longer.  I generally have to keep a little Magic Carpet in the thumbhole to make it clear cleanly.  (Unsolicited -- but deserved -- product plug for R. Clifton)

I have done a bad job of describing what I meant by a proper relaxed span.

Instead I used the word "modern".

Now comes Phillip Marlowes description of last joint over center of fingerholes while the hand is relaxed.

Um somethin like that.  I actually meant to say a "proper" relaxed full fingertip span.

My friend was actually jammed into holes with the midpoint of his next to last portion of finger(not tips over the edge of hole 1/8 of an inch and his last joint touching back of finger hole.

We adusted span 1/8.  Slightly adjusted thumb pitch(added 1/16 extra reverse) to account for extra length.

Now he is getting thumb ALL the way before the fingers and really looks incredible in practice.  Reminds me of Pete Weber!
