Title: thumb Grips or Slug???
Post by: Triple X on October 20, 2004, 04:55:37 AM
What are the advantages or disadvantages of using a "vinyl" thumb grips or a urethane slug. ie.moisture build up,sticking, better & accurate release, better feel-soft or hard.Right now, I use the thumb grips, but I just recently changed one of my ball to a urethane slug & I liked it so much. I just want to make sure that it's not just a temporary feel before I change all my grips on my other bowling balls 'coz it will cost that much.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

grips aren't very easy to work with, like bevel and sanding etc..slugs are much easier to get a person fit..

Urethane "slugs" have always felt slicker to me than the Vinyl "grips"

I hae always found that the vinyl thumb slugs are much susceptible to moisture than urethane.  Vinyl is also softer and will tend to feel much more tacky when compared to urethane slugs.  I think you'll find that you get a more consistent release with the urethane slugs.

I'm with cgilyeat on this!  I have never liked the vinyl based thumb products, especially the premade sleeves.  I have always used urethane slugs in my equipment and find that my customers also prefer the feel.  In fact I just converted another happy customer last night to urethane slugs from vinyl sleeves.  He really couldn't believe the difference and the guy was visually excited about the difference in feel.

cgilyeat & Goof1073 ,
That's what I've notice too on having the vinyl grips that it develops a lot of moisture inside the thumb that causes me to hang or stick sometimes. It doesn't help either if my thumb starts to swell up.I haven't use the ball that I'd changed to a urethane slug that much yet, but I noticed that I get more consistent & better release.I haven't experienced the hang, sticking or thumb swelling on it yet too.I think, I have to use it more often to get a better feel of it before I decide on changing from vinyl grips to a urethane slug.

What do you guys think? Anymore opinions. Keep it coming please...

Also if you use thumb tape in the thumb hole, it gets sticky if you want to remove the tape. Have to use Acetone to clean out the gummy residue in the thumb hole.

Try Goo Be Gone or one of the similar citrus based cleaners.  Cleans almost as well as acetone but is safer and is ABC approved.  After removing the residue, wipe the hole with water or rubbing alcohol to remove the slick feel the cleaner leaves.  --  JohnP
