thumb hole and pitch question
« on: December 01, 2010, 01:12:43 AM »
Okay guys, I have a question. Does and how does thumb tape change the pitch in a thumb hole? I recently got a ball drilled and noticed it was a little big so of course use some tape. My thumb pitch is now 1/4 left lateral and 0. I used to have 1/4 reverse but my thumb would fall out in the back swing so I went to 0. When I added about 5 pieces of tape I began to have a hard time staying in it, it is snug and feels right. So how much does tape effect thumb pitch? And what can I do with tape or something to solve this problem

Tape affects the actual span if you put it in the front of the thumb hole. If the hole is so loose that your thumb moves around in the hole, adding tape can change the perceived pitch, in other words moving the thumb to one side of the hole or another. Where did you put the tape in the hole, and why is the thumb hole so big that you need 5 pieces of tape?

If you put the tape in the front, you have now given yourself the reverse pitch you got rid of by going to 0 reverse. and visa versa if on the back, but sounds like the front....IMHO

Unless what your putting in the hole is tapered...its not possible to effect pitch. Tape lays flat and parallel to the inside of the thumb hole. Now if you stagger the tape and somehow dont give the pitch gage a true surface to measure from, then that could skew your readings

All the responses to this post are correct. But what some of you may be missing is that although the pitch as measured with a gauge will not change with the addition of tape, the thumb itself as inserted into the ball will no longer be in the center of the hole, therefore changing the "effective or perceived" pitch of the hole. At least that's how I see it.
