Thumb hole - mushroomed?
« on: February 25, 2005, 06:57:11 AM »
What does it mean if someone says that the thumbhole has mushroomed?

Okay, I dropped off my Nemesis for drilling and the place has 2 guys that do drillings - one is an older guy (probably 60+) and the other guy is I guess considered the "master."  Anyway, the older guy said he wasn't familiar with this ball and it would be to my benefit to have the other guy drill it (the next morning).  I left another ball there to pull the measurements.  The older guy calls the next morning and says that the other driller didn't show up and would it be okay to have it done the next day (Wednesday) - I'm okay with that since my league isn't until Sunday.  I just called to see if the ball was ready and I talk to the "master" and he says "yeah, this is the ball that the thumbhole was mushroomed right?"  I say "no, this was a brand new ball to be drilled.  Your buddy said you would drill it Tuesday and then called and said you didn't show on Tues and would drill it Wed."  The master says, "Just so you know what happened, okay, well he drilled it up Tuesday before I got here and the thumbhole mushroomed, so we went ahead and plugged it and re-drilled the thumb on Wednesday.  Its ready to be picked up whenever."

So, should I be worried about this?  This was a new ball, and already the thumb has been plugged.  What does mushroom mean, and could it have screwed up my ball?  Should I complain and ask for a new ball?  I haven't seen (or thrown) it yet, so I don't know if it looks bad or anything other than what they told me on the phone.

Were you going to have a thumb slug installed in the ball?  If not they took a bevel sander to the thmub hole to smooth it out and the filler material just below the coverstock must have been soft enough to let the sanding disc remove more material there than in the first 1/2" of the thumb hole.  Hence the "mushroom".

I had a Core Power LRG that I had a similar issue with, I just had the thumb slugged and that took care of the problem.

no, no thumb slug - never had one.  Should I be worried if the ball was soft enough to do that?  Does that signal some sort of defect with the ball itself?

Yes, true story - but it was the older guy that drilled it (same one that said he didn't feel comfortable doing it when I took it in) - at least thats what the "master" told me on the phone.  "Master" seemed like he was trying to be very honest about the situation by telling me what had happened.

I picked the ball up Friday night and I can't tell that the ball was plugged.  The only thing I noticed is that I told the older guy to drill it using the 2L pattern (I tend to track high) - I wanted an earlier roll, more arc and less skid/flip - anyways, they drilled it somewhere between 1E and 2E (which Brunswick warns that might hit finger hole on high trackers) so I was worried I would have problems.

Well, I threw the ball today and it worked great!  Shot a 211 and 158 (lanes started to dry up the 2nd game and I couldn't make the right adjustment.  I should have better luck on fresh league conditions, and I'm very happy with this ball!
