Help me with some crazy layouts!
« on: September 10, 2009, 08:09:56 AM »
First a few details about my game...

Two Hander, so High Rev (450-500), High Speed (19-20 average speed)

High track, little tilt (I think my PAP is around 5 3/4 by 1/8 but haven't actually measured.  Kind of hard when you don't use your thumb, as I don't really have a span.  I track about 3/8 from the fingers and where the thumb hole would be.)

Axis Rotation changes a lot depending on where I'm playing the lanes and what I want the ball to do downlane.

Anyways, I'm looking for any type of layout that will help me control my downlane reaction on the fresh or short patterns.  Basically anytime I can't free wheel the ball.  Fresh sport or short sport patterns are what give me the most problems.  I'm tired of going 150, 170, 220, 250, 250, 250, 250 just like many high rev players.  It would be nice to have a better chance at grinding 190-200 the first few games.

I've read a little about full roller layouts and am going to try a version on a ball soon.  The question I have about this layout, is if I put a "traditional" full roller the pin will be in, or even beyond my track.  Should I move the pin under, or even a little to the right of my "thumb hole" to get it away from my track?  I wasn't sure if this will cause me to track over my finger holes.

What are some other layouts that could potentially give me good results?  I need something that will clear the fronts, read the mids decently, and then stop on the backend.  Hooking at my toe is not what I want.

I have plenty of balls to plug and try things on, so fire away!

Thanks for the suggestions,
Mike

There is a few things you can do. first off. pin under fingers and 5½-6" from pap, also pin under fingers and cg/mb in 315 degrees. this gives a very mild downlane reaction.. duller coverstock to get the ball to burn up early, because of speed and rev rate try 500-1000 abralon. i my self is a high rev player and on shorter condition i often use 500-1000 abralon on very veek drilled high end stuff. like 6-6½ from pap. and if you use symetric cores insted of asym then 6" inches from pap dont flare that much

Do you drill a thumb hole in your balls, even if you don't use it?  --  JohnP

He said high track, low tilt.  He will probably clip the fingers if he did this.

Mike,

There's a topic started on the Track website discussion forum about the "Hickland control layout", it's essentially pin 1" from PAP, 1" from VAL, CG swung right past your VAL, weighthole on PAP to get the ball legal...for high trackers like you and me, the suggestion is to go pin 2" from PAP, on VAL, everything else the same.

I just put this layout on a brand new Perfect Rival and the ball rolls similar to a urethane piece, very calm throughout the lane, doesn't do any backflips on the backend, hooks a little early, but that's only because mine was OOB, a little polish could definitely fix that for you.

The only suggestion is to keep away from weaker-cored balls when trying this layout, since there won't be enough core strength in the ball for the layout to make that much of a difference.

Shoot me a text or facebook message if you have any questions

John P - Yes I do put a thumbhole in the ball, but it isn't in the same spot on every ball.  Gives me more flexibility with layouts to keep the ball legal.

Andy- Thanks I'll have to try it.  See you in Joliet Sunday??

i have the 2" layout on my blue vibe with a hole on the axis, the only difference is the CG is in almost under my ring finger and not out past the VAL.

what i see from it is an early smooth move with enough backend to carry. its perfect for over/under shots, playing way out and i can even move in as far as 4th arrow and still carry

Base your PAP measurements from the grip center using the thumb hole.  All the measurements do is define the PAP location for laying balls out.  Otherwise you'd have to figure out a system to use the center of your bridge as the reference point.  --  JohnP
