Which company make the best (or softest, I like the soft ones) urethane thumb slug?

I recently had a new ball drilled for a tournament and instead of the normal slug (which brand I can't recall at the moment) that was not available, ended up getting a different brand slug.  The good news was the ball was worked just like I had anticipated on the tournament conditions and I opened up with a 266, the bad news is that by the end of the first game (after ignoring the mild soreness in the back of my thumb through practice) a patch of skin ripped off the back of my thumb and I ended up putting that ball away and preformed miserably the rest of the tournament.

The old slugs were soft enough to mark visibly with a finger nail.

Can anybody learn my sum about thumb slugs?  If you want to extol the virtues of other types for thumb inserts feel free.

boondoggle -- I suspect the thumb hole was either drilled smaller or with defferent pitches than what you had been used to.  Or perhaps the hole was left rough instead of sanded smooth.  I don't think there would be that much difference between two brands of urethane slug.  Now if you had changed from vinyl to urethane, that might cause a problem.  --  JohnP

There was definitely a hardness difference.  I could barely make a dent in the new slug with my bevel knife whereas the old slug was like butter.  You could literally make a mark in it with your finger nail.

The new slug was Tenth Frame and the old I can't remember, and the house proprietor says he can't either.  He says his distributor doesn't carry the old and he had to buy the Tenth Frame, but he's looking for a new distributor.

Are you sure the old slug was urethane and not vinyl?  I've never seen a urethane slug soft enough to scratch with your fingernail.

I'm not saying you could shape the things with an overgrown thumbnail and forgo the bevel knife altogether but you could scratch them.

I guess I'll just have to buy several and give them a try.

Difinitely not going Tenth Frame.

Vise, Turbo, Contour... are their any other brands?

Just noticed on Vise's website:

They have urethane slugs rated at 75 (like a bowling ball)

and 45 which is nearly half the hardness...

I believe the 75 hardness is urethane and the 45 hardness is vinyl.  --  JohnP
