Finger Pitch Problem (under nail issue)
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:33:04 AM »
Good afternoon,

For the past few years I have been having a recurring problem with my release creating a blood blister under the nail of my middle finger.  I had a terrible time figuring out what was causing this and I have finally determined that at the point of release, my fingers push outward (in the direction of the nail), pushing on the back of the finger hole, thus creating the pressure causing the pain and blister under my finger nail.

I used to use 3/8 reverse on both fingers.  I am now down to 1/8 reverse and it has gotten better, but every now and again, it still hurts.  At this point, I am quite hesitant to bring the pitch back to zero or even forward.

I am hoping someone out here has either seen or had this problem and could relay how it was corrected.

Have the span checked.  It may be a little long.

Span is actually quite relaxed.

From Jayhawk site:

The following are examples of Pathological Calluses and other Fit Problems with a list of possible explanations for each picture

Broken Blood Vessels Underneath Finger Nails

Span too Long
Hole Too Tight
Insert Too Tight
Excessive Forward Pitch

I had the same problem with bruising under my fingernails, and a not inconsiderable amount of pain on occasion when delivering the ball.
I have *very* stiff finger joints, so the way me and my driller got around it was each time I bought a new ball we changed the pitches to increase the amount of reverse. I'm now at 1/2" on one and 3/4" on the other and am happy with it.
My span is probably a little stretched (maybe 1/16" over) but I currently have a lot of reverse on my thumb too, happy with my fit... If only I was fit enough to bowl now...

I had also read that which was posted on the Jayhawk site.

As I said, my span is quite relaxed.  The addition of reverse pitch makes the problem worse.  I don't use inserts, but my finger holes do not tend to be very tight.

Again, the description on the Jayhawk site are standard fitting techniques.  My problem is caused because of the way I release the ball.  At the point of release, my middle finger pushes against the back of the hole.  Adding reverse to this will cause the nail of the finger to rest on the back of the hole even more so than it does now.

I plan to drill another ball tonite, I will be dropping the pitch to zero forward/reverse and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for all of the input.

I've seen this happen with a relaxed span and a too short span with excessive forward pitch in fingers.
