thumb more toward the palm; WHAT EFFECT
« on: December 30, 2006, 08:05:23 AM »
I heard some talk on this site about more thumb pitch toward the palm.
Why do that? What effect on the grip?

any drillers out there who would share some info as to what effect there is to getting the thumb more under the ball by moving the pitch toward the palm.

thanks for any thoughts.  perhaps I dont' have the question set out properly

Are you asking lateral pitches (left right) or forward?

talkning about lateral pitches
i already moved from 5/16 reverse and did so 1/8 at a time to forward of 5/16 and settled on 1/16 forward. span was shortened a little and went to 1/8 reverse on the fingers from something slightly forwrd in the fingers.  That has helped me to grip the ball much better without squeezing.  Also, have gone down in weight from 15 to 13 due to partially torn muscle in arm.  now throw 14 but arm does get tired.

wondering about lateral change to more under the palm; what does that do?

It usually makes you change your release to go more around the ball instead of more up the back

First of all, your proper lateral pitch should be based on your thumb hinge.  If you move the pitch right (what you're calling toward the palm) from your proper pitch, you tend to rotate around the ball more.  In fact, if you go far enough right you not only will have bad thumb callouses/blisters, you'll hang in the ball if you don't rotate.  --  JohnP

I tend to come around the ball already, having a lower track.  It seems eaiser on my wrist.  Would going away from the thumb, going to more left lateral pitch aid in coming up the back of the ball?

Can I check thumb hinge myself?  Is it just wiggle from left to right and vice versa?  Would a lateral thumb pitch either way help with a weaker wrist?

Thanks for the reply

Moving your thumb pitch left will allow you to release without coming around the ball, but it won't force you to do so.  If you manipulate your thumb, you'll see that the movement is limited in the right pitch direction, but is essentially unlimited in the left direction.  That's why moving pitch to the right will force rotation but to the left won't force staying behind the ball.  Make a fist with your thumb outside your fingers a few times.  If your thumb falls mid way between the ring and middle fingers, I use 0 lateral.  If it falls on the MF I use 3/16 left, if it falls on the RF I use 3/16 right.  Add right or left pitch if it falls more toward the pinkie or index.  Remember, lateral pitch is primarily used for comfort and to avoid blistering/callousing, not to modify the release.  --  JohnP

JohnP, when you say see where your thumb lands, what part of the thumb are you talking about? The tip or thumbnail part or the larger part of your thumb. My thumbnail is right in the middle of the crease between the middle & ring finger. Would that be zero lateral? Thanks & hope I didn't hijack your post timw.

Righty -- I mark by the nail position.  As you describe it, I'd suggest 0 lateral.  --  JohnP
