Title: Thumb nail bruising
Post by: JS on July 05, 2005, 12:04:51 PM
I'm bruising on the nail of my thumb and am wondering what that indicates; span too long?, too little reverse? etc.  Thanks for the suggestions....JS

Most likely one of these or both mixed with a deathgrip on the ball is the cause...

Thanks for the replies.  The 2 balls I am using have the following measurements:

MF 4 3/4 (1/4 forward and 3/8 left lateral)
RF 4 7/8 (1/4 forward and 1/2 right lateral)
Thumb 1/4 reverse and 0 lateral

and

MF 4 3/4 (1/8 forward and 3/8 left lateral)
RF 4 7/8 (1/8 forward and 1/2 right lateral)
Thumb 5/16 reverse and 0 lateral

What suggestions for change?  Also, by deathgrip, you mean squeezing right?  If so, wouldn't I want more forward in the thumb to be able to relax?

My guess would be the span is too long.

The base of the thumb is leveraging against the ball and forcing the nail into the back side of the thumb hole.

Put your thumb fully into the ball with the fingers laid across the finger holes. Don’t stretch your hand. If the first knuckle isn’t half way across the finger holes then the span is too long.

Is nail damage on corner of nail?

Back of nail?

Details necessary.

Which corner if a corner.

LL,

The bruise is in the center of the thumb nail, measuring top to bottom.  From side to side, it's not on the outside edges but takes up the middle.  Thanks...JS

JS -- The Jayhawk website has a good list of fitting problems related to various finger conditions.  I haven't seen the link posted lately, so here it is.  I don't know if it hits your particular problem or not.  --  JohnP

JohnP....nothing about what I have but it was very interesting reading.  Thanks for the link....JS

I had another ball drilled up today like this:

MF 4 11/16 (5/8 reverse and 3/8 left lateral)
RF 4 3/4 (3/8 reverse and 1/2 right lateral)
Thumb 1/8 reverse and 0 lateral

Shortened my span, had reverse put in my fingers and have less reverse in thumb.  Will see if this helps relax my grip.

I agree probably slightly too much span combined with too little reverse for a streched span puts that bruise on back of thumb nail.

Your moves sound right with shortened span.  Let us know.
