Thumb pain
« on: January 20, 2005, 02:43:45 AM »
Hello all, I have a problem. Let me give a brief history. I have went to a relaxed span within the last year. I went from 4 3/4 and 4 7/8 to 4 1/16 and 4 3/16. I have also been trying to change my thumb pitches. Originally was an 1/8th in and 1/4 reverse. Then tried 1/8 reverse and 1/8 in. I still seemed to have to grip the ball in the downswing so I am now trying forward pitch. First off tried 1/4 forward and 1/4 away. Ball felt better but was rubbing a bit on the palm side of my thumb so I figured take some of the lateral pitch out. Now sitting at 1/4 forward and 0 lateral. The problem is now I feel like I am going to drop the ball again on the downswing again and I am getting pain and slight numbess at the base of my thumb and the area between the thumb and index finger. Would the change in lateral pitch cause this. I really like the ball at 1/4 away but fiugured with it rubbing it was to much. What do you guys think? Any help and opinions appreciated as always.

Thanks, cooksey

with out actually seeing your hand in the ball, its tough to judge correct span, but it sounds as if you made a huge jump (shortening by 11/16th).  Yes it's true that most people have spans that are too long...but I'm not sure I have ever seen anyone that was off that far.  I would ask around and find a different pro-shop (possibly that you have not been to before) with a good reputation and go in and get fit.  See what they come up with.  I would guess its probably not where you are at right now.  Alternatively, maybe you could catch a seminar (such as Lefty did with Bill Taylor's) where they cover fitting your hand...

There are guidelines as to how far over the front lip your knuckles should be or your middle of your the part of your finger between 1st and 2nd joint should be.
