This topic comes up often on this site and everyone has a different opinion in most cases. You did not tell us what your previous pitches were. As a general rule, thumb right lateral pitch to the palm and also forward pitches will keep you in the ball longer. Reverse pitches and left lateral away for a right hand bowler, will make you come out of the ball a lot quicker. If you are just just trying to keep from losing the ball in the down swing, forward pitch should take care of that. I contend that comfort is the key as to how much you need to go forward pitch. I am still experimenting with my pitches and I would suggest go with 1/16 or 1/8 at a time until you hit a good feel without any discomfort. I hope this helps some.
