Looks like some of it is metric.

We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

I doubt that Greg.  Who has a 2" span?

whoa!

maybe the 5, 3, are grips. as far as the 50,52 numbers for span, yor guess is as good as mine.  the fractions are pitches.  GOOD LUCK

My span is a little under 5". I think those numbers are from the ball he used for fitting. The ball had holes drilled all over it, I was wondering if it was a standard tool which someone could backwards engineer.I am 100% sure my grip sizes are 23/32 and 21/32 since I've recently replaced them. How about the pitches can someone make them out?

thanks,

Middle finger = 1/4 reverse and 1/8 right.  Ring finger = 3/8 reverse and 1/8 left.  Thumb = 7/16 reverse and 1/8 right.

At least that is what it looks like to me.  And it seems that you will need to have a wide bridge to allow the right and left finger pitches.

That's what I would say.  Grip sizes are #5 and #3... which I beleive are as you stated 23 and 21.  No idea about the span or thumb size though.  It must be related to the fitting ball somehow?  Taking into account the amount of reverse pitch, it might refer to 5.0" and 5.2"... although I have never seen spans written that way before?  I think your best bet would be to either double check with the shop to get an explaination (and conversion into inches) or seek out a new shop and have it compared/double checked.

Good luck,

The driller is really good, he's shop has been opened over 20 years and is not located in a bowling alley. Which means people have to go to him. I drilled up two balls from him and he did an outstanding job with both. The only problem I have is that he doesn't carry a very large stock of balls. He has a decent stock but of particular balls but from a limited number of manufacturers. He can order balls and get them quickly but I can't inspect the pin/cg/mb layouts before committing to buy it. I wanted to reuse my drill sheet potentially at another shop if something catches my eye or something goes on sale.

The other thing is this shop isn't that convenient for me. It's about 40 miles against traffic patterns

Thanks for all the help.

Do you use a thumb sleeve or slug. I would think since he has drilled a long time he has come up with short hand to do the sheet I think the span is done like this the first number is inches and the second number is probally a fraction of a 16th of an inch meaning your ring finger is 5 inches and 2/16th. as far as the thumb I not sure my jayhawk machine bits are in fractions but if he has or has bought an old set of bits it could stand for the bit number that he uses. I would agree with the pitches as stated above as well as grip sizes.

His system must be specific to the press he uses.  Using 1/4 R and 1/4 L on the lateral finger pitches would almost assure the holes will come together at the bottom.  I use an old AMF sidewinder press, and to get the 1/4 L and 5/8 R finger pitches I want, I have to set the press at 3/8 R and 0 (too complicated to try to explain).  --  JohnP

I do not currently have a thumb sleeve in this ball. But I'm thinking about using a switch grip in the future.

That's not too hard to explain Measured vs. Actual, I get it.

What do you guys think of the thumb pitch? doesn't 7/16 sound like an awful lot even for a 5" span?

What are common finger pitches people use? and how would you determine the right pitch for you? The only test he had me do was to grip a measuring ball with a predefined offset and ask me if one finger had more grip pressure than the other. Then changed the offset until both had the same grip pressure. I don't see where finger pitch got determined and how they got determined.

Thanks a whole bunch, I got much to learn on drilling techniques all this helps greatly.

BTW: I've been out back into bowling for only two months now after a 10+ year remission and threw my best series last night using the ball this driller drilled up: 192, 246, 203, and 242
