Layouts for Lefty's with high rev-rates
« on: January 23, 2015, 06:05:56 PM »
I would like some opinions for layouts for a friend of mine.  He is a left-hander with a rev rate around 425 and a PAP of 4 1/4.  Looking for suggestions for reducing over under and also to get length without having vicious snap.  Ball suggestions would be helpful too.

Thanks.

Simple layouts and make surface his best friend.

As SVstar34 has said, surface is his best friend..
O/U is a surface issue..

If he likes skid/flip then a 30 to 40 degree VaL angle would be good with 4 to 6" pins to PaP..
Drill angles in the 55 to 75 range..

Wanting to reduce over/under and get length without snap is a release issue.  You can't fix all of that at the same time with a ball.

Surface dictates length...so smooth cover to create desired amt of length then use slow response layouts - either pins closer to the pap or weight holes down VAL all to slow the ball down at the 35-45' portion of the lane

Consider the equipment that your friend can purchase. As most nights he may be by himself, with his hand, he can use weaker smoother rolling stuff and stay in play long than with stronger or more skid/snap equipment.

my rev rate isnt quite that high but close (about 400). like everyone has said, its a surface issue. on house shots i either use solids at 2000 or pearls at 4000. i very rarely use polish and 4000 usually gets down lane just fine especially after lane shine sets in. another thing that helped me this year was using pin down layouts on pearls so they will be flatter downlane and reduce the over/under

edit: i usually stick to weaker layouts also. 4 3/4-5 3/4" and rarely use asymetrical cores, dont need anything fancy on house patterns

As a lefty with most of the previous issues listed above.
before i really educated myself in this game, i tried to drill out the same thing mentioned above.
it came down to me just wanting to get better plain and simple
took lessons, worked on my fundamentals
found a gold level coach that changed my grip
learned how to tape a ball properly

then i learned about surfaces, layouts, etc
As a lefty by yourself most nights is an advantage on THS, but can be a huge disadvantage on the flatter patterns.

1. solid fundamentals will help alot
2. im 95% symmetrical pieces in my bag
3. most of my equipment is at least 5" pin-pap
4. get a spinner, you will learn more about ball reactions by having a spinner and adjusting your own pieces
5. practice, practice, practice whenever possible
6. have fun......
