Thumb pitches
« on: January 06, 2010, 09:56:35 AM »
In the near future i want to experiment with different thumb pitches and i was wondering the actual difference between forward and reverse pitch. Also, does anybody have any knowledge of what pitches pros use?

I feel bad for the bowler''s defenceless equipement when the bowler is not bowling up to par. . . .don''t you?

If you want to experiment, experiment don't worry about what anyone else does.  Pure experimentation is probably the only way you'll truly find out what's best for you.

From what I've read, some pros still use some reverse, but not a lot.  Some of the more modern players are around zero, with maybe a little forward.

Reverse lets you get out of the ball faster and cleaner, but too much will make you grip the heck out of it (probably without even realizing so).  Forward will let you relax your hand much more, but too much grip pressure and you'll hand up.

I use to go 3/8 reverse for a very long time.  For me, it actually did more harm than good cause I would kung fu grip the ball.

Recently I accidentally had a ball drilled with 1/8 reverse pitch.  Not only does the ball come off of my hand cleaner, but I don't have the urge to kung fu grip it, actually increase my speed and rev rate.  I've gone 1/8 forward in all my equipment now.

yes, most pro's go with a Zero pitch, its so they dont "grip" the ball, and keep thier hand relaxed.

I just had my thumb pitch checked, and it was 1/2 reverse, and when i had my switch grips installed, i had the pitch changed to 1/4 reverse and its NICE....

I actually didnt mind the 1/2 reverse cuz i'd been using it for well years.....and i used tape to keep my thumb hole nice n snug so i could keep my hand relaxed.

i had 1/8 reverse pitch up until last week. then tried a ball with 1/8 forward and hung up in it. then a buddy of mine noticed i need to go under a little cause of the way i held the ball when it was at my side just holding it. so i went 1/16 forward and 3/16 right. and i shoot 300 826 the same night. it's amazing what the right pitch will do and don't be afraid to do multiple trials if needed. and once you get the right one you will no after a couple shots. but if you feel you need the change it's worth it to spend the 40 to 50 bucks cause your gonna make that back in a hurry when it comes off your hand clean

Keep in mind, the correct thumb pitches depend to a large degree on how fast the player throws the ball. Those with slower ball speeds may find some of the above recommendations challenging to say the least

The nice thing is that since most drillers have more sophisticated equipment these days, you can change your pitches by 1/32 or less if you want to see what it would do for your game. Often, the areas where you carve out the most material in the hole, after you drill the ball will tell you which way to move the pitches.

I'm a high rev high speed power player. That being said, my thumb pitches are 1/4 forward and 1/8 right. I used this on a friends ball and from then on this has been my thumb pitch. I use it to naturally get my thumb to hold onto the ball longer with very minimal grip pressure.

This is one of the most uninformed set of posts I have seen on this site!

PS rumor, innuendo, my friend said, I shot a high series with these pitches...what does this all have to do with how a persons hand fits in a hard bowling ball!
