Thumb pitches
« on: January 06, 2005, 02:36:06 AM »
Currently my span is 5 1/16 x 5 1/4 with either a 1/4 or 1/8 reverse in the thumb(no lateral) and I wanted to work on cleaning up my release a little bit and was looking for some suggestions on how should I start experimenting with pitches both lateral, forward and reverse.  Please explain what each type of pitch would do to my release. (right handed) Thanks

The Jayhawk site (link below) gives information regarding the affects of improper pitch on your hand.  The Unofficial FAQ thread in the Miscellaneous Forum has a pretty good summary of how changes in thumb pitch affect your release.  After you've read those, come back and post any specific questions.  --  JohnP

slick,

Depends on what you mean by "cleaning up your release".  You might just need some tape???  With your long span, doesn't sound like you have excessive reverse pitch.  Depends on a couple different things.  How limber is your thumb joint?  Do you have a thick web from your thumb to index finger?  Do you have a thick pad above your thumb in the palm of your hand?  Is the span correct to begin with?

I'm also one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" guys.  If you are not getting blisters, pains, knots, etc....  Hanging up in the ball, dropping the ball.....  Maybe your grip is good???  Kinda hard to tell without watching you and looking at your ball/thumb hole/grip....
