thumb swelling/what to do
« on: March 10, 2007, 11:40:03 PM »
To start with my thumb is swelling every time I bowl and I never had this problem till this year and I have not changed pitches or span. It's really having an effect on my game what should I do:
1) get re fitted try different pitches
2) change all thumb slugs out and use changeable slugs,Grip Loc,Thom's Thumb,Turbo's offering. if so which is best they all look OK but I've never seen anyone who uses them. What is the cost to install for each ball.

i would go to your pro shop guy and tell him where it is swelling.  Maybe he can make a pitch change, or   I would have him take some out of the thumb and start with tape and take peices out as needed.

I don't think the grip loc or switch grip will help.  Plus its really expensive to start.

Before I'd do much of anything, since you say your pitch/span has not changes, look at your diet. Have you slowed down on fluids ? Started anything different ? Reason I ask, I drink WAY to much coffee, my thumb would swell into the second game. I switched to water and the thumb does not swell at all, now.

I also noticed I'd eat a bit more sweets at times and that would make my thumb swell a bit, so, if you have changed or not drinking enough fluids, IMO, that might be your problem.

Just guessing. Hope this helped.

My thumb changes from 29/32 on cool evenings to 1 inch on 7am Reno trips. That is 5 drill sizes. To have a ball fit in Reno and then use it here, I would need a box of white tap. Griploc has saved my thumb swell problems. I just keep all sizes with me and I am good. Will change usually one size in any given 3 game set. Al

ps...have been using now for three years with great improvements, esp morning tourney sets.

The better a bowler becomes, the more he will be aware of thumb fit. Before switching to Thom's Thum,my thumb would vary by as much as 12 pieces of white bowler's tape!Diet, elevation, air temperature, humidity, number of games bowled, time of day,all affect the size of your thumb.I now carry 5 sizes of thumbs and have had to use them all at one time or another. The Thom's Thum system is great, but you may have to search for a driller that installs it.I believe that changeable thumbs are the wave of the future and will one day be as common as inserts are now!I for one, will never go back to a fixed thumb again!
