Tips on Cutting down Vinyl Thumb Slugs

Need some suggestions....I currently cut down the excess on my Slugs with a single edge razor blade...Is there a safer or better way to trim down the Slugs?...Or a special tool for this?...Thanks in advance for some help

Correct....Littleblackbug....I'm referring to the excess that hangs over....Do You use the router on vinyl slugs too?....I know You need a router on the hard urethane ones....Thanks for the help

That thing ever get away from you ?  I use a router instead , and I a thought I was fearless. If I used your method I think I'd be using the handicap ramp to bowl as I hoisted the ball onto the ramp with my stubs. It would be scary to be in my shop observing also if I was using your method as I seem to have simple polishing pads get away from me on occasion.  You obviously have better spinner skills than I.  Al

I usually use the router.  Vinyl slugs cut much easier with the router than do urethane slugs.  I like to cut them all down with a plug cutter on the press, but when I am busy busy, I use the router so I don't have to move the press.

If any of you guys want my vinyl thumb slugs, I'll be happy to junk those things.  I always use my bevel knife to trim up any of the slugs I do after I cut them down with the plug cutter because you will never be able to get it flush to the ball with the plug cutter no matter how tight your table is.  I'm a perfectionist anyway and I always fine tune the slugs with the bevel knife to get it a flush to the ball as possible.

Another thought, I haven't tried this (use urethane slugs), but it should work.  Don't cut the slug down at all.  Drill the thumb hole into the uncut slug, then trim the excess with a razor blade like you do with a vinyl sleeve.  --  JohnP

Oh yes you can. Bring your ball to Edmond to Anne Marie Duggan's pro shop. She does the following procedure:

1. Drills thumb hole sized to fit your thumb and to the EXACT span measurement

2. Drills the 1 1/4" hole for the slug

3. Roughen the slug with a file, put glue in hole and use drill press to push slug down into the hole, never moving the jig or removing the ball from the jig.


4. Drill the thumb hole sized to fit your thumb.....Note, thru these steps, you will notice she never removed the ball from the jig so when the thumb hole is drilled into the slug, it is perfectly in the center of the slug and perfectly pitched to the reqired specs.

5. Now she inserts the plug cutter into the drill press, adjusts the jig to the proper setting to match up to the plug cutter and cuts the slug down to perfectly FLUSH with the ball. No further trimming of the slug is needed.
