To any1 who knows about Vise Grip - VACU INSERTS???
« on: March 02, 2006, 01:48:11 PM »

Question 1.. Is this correct on the installation,  drill the top of the hole 1  1/32" bit about 1" down and 15/16" bit the rest of the way.

Question 2: Insert sizes should be 1 or 2 sizes below normal? example. i am 3/4" (middle) ,  11/16 (ring)  so i would go with 11/16 middle, 5/8 ring??

I know buddies used to have a section on how to install them but i cant find it anymore.. Any help would be appreciated. thanks TJ

#1. The hole is the  same  size all the way down.
#2. You are correct, the lift size is one to two sizes smaller. (But from personal experience make sure that the lifts feel alright before you glue them in place.)

There is a section for vacu-inserts on the vise website, that pretty much sums it all up.

I drill the regular size for the insert and tehn drill down 1" with a 1-1/64 bit.

I have found that if I use the 1-1/32 bit like they say that the hole ends up being too big and the end product looks like crap and feels sloppy to boot.

Maybe its because my fingers swell so much but I kinda prefer a little bit more room, and I haven't had any problems with the lifts feeling sloppy.

Doug, do you still glue the lift into the sleeve??

I do it just the way Coach says:  1 1/32 down 1 inch.  31/32 down another 3/8 of an inch, no sleeve needed.

Usually go down 1 1/2 sizes, I keep the half sizes in stock.  For some people, two full sizes down is too tight, your mileage may vary.

Also, I glue the grip all the way around on the bottom, this helps create the vacuum.

I use Vacu Grips myself, and we do alot of them in the shop.  Growing trend.  Am going to stock the lady size grips, so that we can do them for women.  The smaller OD grips, have smaller sizes than the 31/32 size grips.

You don't need the sleeve if you leave the bottom portion of the hole at 31/32...that's basically all the sleeve does; take a larger hole and makes it a 31/32 hole at the bottom.  Why waste the money on the sleeve when you can easily perform the same task with two drill bits?

Can you replace your old normal grips with vacu grips. Will the holes be ok or would they need to be pluged.
