To PAP or not to PAP ...
« on: January 28, 2008, 09:28:46 AM »
A newbie question.  My wife and I started bowling a month ago and my wife wants her own ball.  We were talking to the pro-shop guy and I asked if he would need to find her PAP before drilling a ball.  He said no, that at this point her release wasn't consistent enough to worry about a PAP.  Consistent or not, she's rolling 150's, 160's and rolled a 173 today.  Is the pro-shop right or wrong about finding her PAP?  Thx.

He can generalize it based on her current track. And as long as he's somewhat close, she wont notice any significant difference in roll.

On a house shot with modern equipment, for most bowlers, that's probably fine.  If she tracks somewhat normally, knowing her PAP within an inch is enough to get by.

I haven't seen her bowl, but your pro has (I assume).  Some beginners just do not release the ball consistently enough to get a good PAP location.  My wife has been bowling for years, but she still changes her release from shot to shot.  I spent 30 minutes one day trying to find a PAP location such that the tape would stay stationary, never did.  --  JohnP

If I might add - and as long as her track/PAP is not at the extremes.

If shes trying to get better...which sounds like she is, the driller should take 5 minutes and watch her bowl. He/She should be able to determine a proper layout for your wife. Really 4 different rolls...High, med, low, and full roller. Driller does need to make sure which your wife is closest to. Normally a driller will drill safe label drill, but for some reason shes a full roller...not so good! Good luck and hopefully your driller does the right thing.

funny thing I was just thinking about this same topic.  I ordered a new ball awhile ago, and needed to get a few other ones fixed because the spans were all different.  Anyways, the local guy around here really pissed me off so I had to drive 3 hours to what I thought was the best guy in the state.  I walked in with 6 balls and said can I get these fixed, I would like them all to be the same span, pitches, etc.  I went over where my thumb was blistering, what balls had long spans, etc.  Long story short, he doesn't ask me to throw any shots, doesn't ask what my PAP is, in fact he asks nothing.  In fact he doesn't even ask what ball reaction I would like to get out of each one.  Keep in mind, this guy drills for Brunswick at Nationals every year for at least the past 3 years.  He takes some measurements for the span, and said I'll fix them all for $250.00.

Proshop guy did okay in this situation.  I drilled a resurgence for a lady two months ago.  I watched her toss 3 shots and all 3 had a different track.  How do you drill a ball for that?  I put the pin above her ring...

Don't be surprised by that.  I had the storm guys drill a ball for me last year.  They totally whiffed my finger pitches, both 1/4 rev.  They drilled my ring 0 and my middle 1/4 fwd.  Brunswick guys charged my grandfather $5 to buzz out a thumb hole, that took 30 secs.  Now, he didn't purchase the ball there, but $5?  No equipment for me at Nationals ever again.

Did they force him to pay the $5? Do you cry at the gas station too when the prices rise?

Thx for the info. folks.  I'll at least ask that he watch her roll a few shots before he drills.

Isn't this really a catch 22?

Your wife doesn't own a ball now, so I'm going to assume that she is throwing a house ball, which most likely means she is throwing a straight ball.

Is she going to continue throwing a straight ball, or does she have plans to learn how to hook?

If she has plans to hook the ball, she will most likely want to move to a finger-tip grip (vs the conventional grip of a house ball).

Planning to throw a hook, and moving to a finger-tip grip will affect the way she releases the ball, therefore affecting her PAP.

As a beginner, most likely the shop will go with a safe drill, probably "label" and you will have to work on any fine tuning from there.

I agree with the Pro Shop operator. Knowing if she is full, low, med, or high tracker probably would be good enough at this point.
