span/pitch question
« on: February 11, 2009, 11:56:48 AM »
if you have a span of 5 1/8 5 1/4 and your fingers lay over the center of your finger holes, is this correct. It feels good span wise. But It feels like it wants to come off my hand just a tad early i have 1/2 reverse thumb pitch with 0 left or right. What should i change. Also thumb is a milled oval it is snug.

Depends on your fingers but that may be a little stretched if you go by the current relaxed grip measuring standard.  Where does the front edge of the gripping holes line up on your fingers.  Should be around the center of the two joints.
Also, you could cut down on the amount of reverse a bit. Should keep you in the ball a bit longer. It will take some getting used to.
Do you have a short thumb?

Depends on how flexible your thumb is, if you feel your coming out of the ball early then cut back on the reverse until it feels right. I have not drilled a 1/2" reverse in a few years for anyone.

Just out of curiosity...how do you test the flexibility of your thumb?  What's considered a short thumb?  I drilled out a new ball, and reduced my reverse pitch from 3/8" to 1/4", but now the ball seems like its hanging up some...or is that still me just subconsciously squeezing it (possible though I'm making an effort not to grab it)?  Sorry to jump the thread.

I look at the actual flex of the thumb, as a rule of mine if a person has a very stiff thumb I use less reverse. If they are double jointed I may go with more reverse as they will have a tendency to squeeze. I make sure the thumb pitches, span and fingers pitches all work out before drilling the first hole as it all makes a difference.

Drillmn300--Thanks, hmmm...let me ask you this:  If the span is too long, will it cause you to knuckle, or squeeze the ball, thereby requiring you to have more reverse than is necessary for your span in order to clear out of the ball?  I'm thinking the answer is yes.  Also, is it common for a person's span to change as they get older?
