I have a Spike hpt that sounds like the core and shell has separated. How can this be checked? If so, what can you do to "fix" the problem?

It's very easy to check, but impossible to repair. Take a vacuum and stick it over the thumb. If you can feel air being sucked into the fingers, the core is separated. If that happens, you have a paper weight.

I have not personally done this to fix a ball when the core has separated, but I know of a guy that runs a pro shop that has......

What he does is drill small hole through the thumb hole, probably 11/16 and pours ball plug in it until it starts to rise into the thumb. He has fixed a few and everyone that I know of that had him do it loved the results.....so, if you really love the ball try that. BUT make sure you know that in doing this, the core will more than likely not be in the same position it was in before it separated.

I tried the vacuum test and did not feel any air through any of the holes. The ball does make a "hollow" sound when it comes in contact with other balls on the rack. Thanks for the suggestions, but before I use it as a paper weight, I think I will "sand one side until its flat to see if it will break any harder" (Just kidding)

The core being separated does not hurt the performance of the ball.

I had an x-calibur that did and shot 3 300's after it did. Sounded really bad but performed great.

I disagree with Pinbuster, the core being separated does affect the ball. How could it not? The core will be sitting in a different position than it originally did.

I had a customer bring me a KingCobra that had its core separated. When he threw it, on solid pocket shots the thing would leave 5-10s, 5-7s and some other really ugly stuff. It just had no drive at all.

Trust me, try drilling the thumb hole out with a small bit and pouring the ball plug in it. It worked.
