Top Weight Challenge
« on: August 30, 2007, 03:02:43 PM »
While in a local proshop this evening a guy came in with a X comp Storm Agent without the box.  14# ball that had a 1 1/2" pin and a whopping 6 ozs. of top weight.

Sure hope he got a great deal on it.

Anyhow, the operator of the shop explained that he didn't feel that he could safely layout the ball and keep it legal and have it react in a normal fashion.  The customer was upset, but opted for a 14# Tropical Storm.  This was the customers first ball, and I feel a far better choice than a gutted Agent.

He's basically stuck with a #14 pound anchor that smells like oranges, but do any of the more experienced shop operators here think they could have done the ball any justice?

Drilled the fingers deep (or thumb), and put a weight hole up high.

That ball really is not difficult to drill....to me it shows the operator really doesn't know what they are doing.

If it were a 5 or 6 inch pin...that would be more difficult...but a short pin like that shouldn't be that tough.

Meh... He's been drilling balls longer than I've been alive.  He's experienced enough to know that while it was drillable, the customer, and himself would be happier not drilling it.

Since the pin is short you would want to put the Pin near the horizontal midplane, and the CG in the thumb quadrant, stacked or 80 degrees. Pin in Palm, basically and drill the fingers 3¼" deep. this should get alot of the top weight out and cause there to be no side weight issues.

Why would you shift a CG in the thumb quadrant if you planned on drilling the fingers deep? (especially with 6oz of top!)

I've seen drillers that have been around for 20 years not able to drill a modern core.

Drilling the fingers and thumb will remove 2.5 - 3 ozs.  If a drilling keeps the CG closer to the grip center, a hole closer to the grip could be utilized to remove enough of the top weight to make it plenty legal as well as any side weight.

I was thinking the same thing.
With the CG as the center of grip, the fingers and thumb would have to be drilled deeper than normal, just get it to 2.5-3 ounces of top, it'll be fine.

Heck, my ball driller has been in the business for over 20 years, and told me: "at 4.7 top, the ball will wobble down the lane"

Experience can be decieving. While you know the ball wont wobble with 4.7 top and about 2.2 net after drilling, those 20 years make you 2nd guess yourself if it will or not.

  Nick,

Sounds like he was going for the "RICO", but I think the ball has too much topweight for that drilling to work correctly on this ball, even with a deep thumb and large X-hole.

To me, it seems like a nice pin under on grip centerline with deep finger and thumbholes would get it back to "legal" and, if needed, the X-hole could be placed near the CG, just out from under the palm to avoid the "feel" of the hole in the palm area.

This wouldn't leave the ball "gutted" as mentioned before.  It should still have proper static weights and perform as designed.

A label drill should work ok with no problem. On a normal drill for me, we take out about 3oz without a weighthole. Drilling the fingers slightly deeper & the thumb deeper if need be should get the ball well below 3 oz of remaining top.

I had a 4.9 top weight golden nugget it had the fingers drilled deep with pin under the ring, no wobble no issues that ball will work for him.
