drilling question
« on: December 31, 2007, 05:06:57 AM »
Is a drilling with pin above fingers compared to below fingers going to change the angularity of the roll. I know pin below is going to start earlier. I have had 2 balls drilled with pin below ring and for me they seem to be more angular than everything I had pin above. It seems weird to me because I was always told it would be opposite.

I really dont get a great reaction with pin above the ring. I was wondering why that might be. My stats are in my profile. Is it because of my ball speed?

For instance, I had a Raid that was drilled pin above the ring and it never seemed to be angular whatsoever. It would be really smooth and would struggle to get going when it was supposed to, unless I got in the dry to quick and it would over react causing a lot of over/under. I know pin-to-pap makes a big difference in this but I thought pin placement does as well so I am just trying to understand.

Can you tell us the mass bias placement on the balls you have. I have found MB placement to have a large part to do on angularity, but only on some balls that i have and not others. I'd love to know why that is.

The one ball I have pin below is a Resurgence, the cg on that is kicked out maybe 3 inches off the center of my span. I no longer have the Raid but it was similar so probably 2-3 inches from my thumb hole.

I believe a 75 degree MB, will give you a more angular motion. I have 2 BLAZING INFERNOS with close pin placement but 2 different mass bias placements, and and 2 very different motions. The one with a 75 degree mb is quite a bit longer before it makes it move, its a skid/flip motion.  The one with the mb at 45 degrees is more of a early roll, kind of a curve motion. To be fair I would check your PRO SHOP for help.I have found a 90 degree (or stacked) mb to give medium length with a smooth backend.
I hope this helps. I'm sure there are some very qualified people at this web site.
