Hi all,

Just punched up a used Zone Classic I had with the Rico layout, and weighed it out to get the starting statics before I put the X hole in. To my surprise, I currently only have 1/2 positive side and 1/4 thumb on it. I do realize that statics are not worth much these days besides just keeping the ball USBC legal, but putting the recommended 1" hole 2 1/2 deep hole might get me deep into the negative wouldn't it? I see that Nick's site mentions that the 1 inch hole is variable, so I was thinking of lowering the bit size to 3/4 or less. I also plan on rolling the ball as is to see where I track as well before the hole.

Anyone run into this before and what size did you use for the X hole?

if you only have 1/2 side then why put a wt hole in it? dont make since to me.

The last line in the original post is important. He should see where he tracks first. Part of the purpose for the hole is to raise the bowtie, such a low pin tends to lower the bowtie as well, the hole brings it back up to prevent you from flaring over the fingers.

The X-hole raises the bowtie and is definitely important. If you threw the ball right now as it is, it would be WEAKER than if you drilled the X-hole and left it with negative 1 oz side.

I'd go 7/8 x 2" if you're worried about going over. 3/4" bit or less is not worth your time.

Decided to do just this and with the 7/8 hole 2 inches deep. That put me at about 1/8 negative side and 1/4 finger. So I went the full 2 1/2 inches in depth and figured I can go a bit deeper with the fingers if need be.

On a side note, I did roll the ball before the hole and actually missed the fingers with my track barely. The hole moved it up another inch or so to make it just right. Great reacting ball too. Used it on the USBC Nationals shot at our local house and worked quite well even though the ball's surface really wasn't the best choice for the tighter lanes. It might be a monster on a more typical shot.
